Global sales of environmentally-friendly cars hit a record high last year, thanks to the
increasing popularity of electric vehicles. The Korea Automotive Research Institute says,
almost 1-point-7 million eco-friendly cars were sold worldwide in 2013, up some seven-and-a-half
percent from the previous year. Sales of electric cars surged more than 1-hundred-10
percent to 95-thousand units, double the number of units compared to 2012.
Plug-in hybrid vehicles, a combination of hybrid and electric, also saw an increase
of 18 percent on-year to 52-thousand units. Toyota with its Prius hybrid continues to
be the market leader in the eco-friendly vehicle market.
