[Music plays] >>You may be required to take placement assessments
in math and English. If English is not your primary language, there is also a test for
English as a Second Language course placement. The results of your assessments assist counselors
in recommending classes that will be best for your individual needs. Assessments can
also be used to satisfy prerequisites for some courses. Your assessments can be taken
at any of the Los Rios Campuses.
If you are new to college, you are required to take a math and an English (including English
as a Second Language) assessment if you want to take a course beyond the first in the series.
If you took an AP test in high school and scored high enough, you might not be required
to take the assessments. Consult with a counselor to learn more.
If you are a continuing student or transferring from another college, you are not required
to take the Math and English assessments if you have completed Math and/or English courses
at a college or university. You must have passed these courses with a C or better.
In some cases it is still a good idea to take assessments to determine your current skill
level. See a counselor for more information.
Many non-degree seeking students do not need to assess. The Counseling Center at your college
can help you determine if you need to take the Math or English assessment test.
Most new students do need to take assessments. If you are one of them, be sure to take your
assessments seriously. Your placement in courses will be based on the results of your assessments.
Be sure to review and prepare ahead of time.
Also, make sure you get a good night's rest before taking your assessments.
It is highly recommended that you study and review for the test. You can view sample questions
and take practice tests, available at your college website.
If you have questions about whether you are required to assess, contact the Counseling
Center or Assessment Center at your Los Rios college.
