bjbj Jill Trewhella: Academic research is the foundation for our ability to live better
in the world in every way. Super: What drives academic research? Jill Trewhella: Academic
research nurtures the human spirit and responds to the needs of our communities. The quest
for discovery is inherent to the human condition. It made men get in ships and sail off to discover
the edge of the world. It drove us to climb Mount Everest and to go to the moon. The knowledge
frontier is as compelling for many of us as those kinds of frontiers and academic research
provides us with the means to really explore those frontiers and in doing so we discover
things that are of great value to our community. Super: How is research applied? Jill Trewhella:
So one of my heroines in academic research is Marie Curie. Marie Curie was very curious
about the elements and she discovered the reason for radioactivity and a whole host
of benefits to us that we take for granted today, but really were the result of one woman
sitting in a laboratory thinking about atoms. So, just as Marie Curie was pursuing her interests
and curiosity in her laboratory in the early 20th century, our researchers here today are
doing the same kind of thing. We have researchers in engineering and science advancing our ability
to create robots that can do work in hazardous environments or explore hazardous environments
to keep our workforce safe for example in the mining sector. It s also providing the
means to give people with disabilities the ability to work more easily and get around
more easily in our world. Super: Why should academic research matter to Australians? Jill
Trewhella: Academic research should matter to everyone because it really is a key to
our everyday lives and all that we do in it. If we don t fund academic research, we re
really taking away an incredibly rich resource for society. We re taking away the ability
to advance our understanding of our world, to develop new methodologies and technologies
that can improve our quality of life and we re really taking away something from that
rich educational environment that we want to give our next generation of citizens, of
contributors to our communities, of our next generation of researchers. hvn| hvn| hvn|
