Mesa Community College started in an old church building in downtown West Mesa on Extension and Main Street. The year it started I was teaching and coaching at Coronado High School.
I had been in the Scottsdale system for a number of years. I got a call from Dr. John Riggs and he asked me if I would be interested in coming to the new Mesa Community College that was being started.
I told him that I wasn’t sure but I would come and talk to him about it.
The reason that I wasn’t sure was because I had a very, very successful team at Coronado High School in basketball, and I wasn’t very excited about leaving that team for their senior year. They were all juniors. It (Coronado) was a new school.
I went over and talked to Dr. Riggs. I had met him a few years earlier when he was a dean of students at Eastern Arizona Community College. It was Gila Community College at that time, or Gila Junior College.
I went over and talked to him and we visited for quite awhile. During the conversation he fairly well convinced me for my own good and my academic development I should consider it carefully.
I told him that I would and after some consideration I decided to give it a try.
