Hi, Alexi here. Opto 22 offers two stand-alone Programmable Automation Controllers, or PACs:
the SNAP-PAC-S1 and S2. In this OptoMinute, we'll discuss the differences, which are mainly the serial ports.
The S1 has three serial ports. Two are RS-232. One offers full handshaking, and is perfect for use with modems.
The other can be used for a direct connection to a serial device. The third port is RS-485.
The SNAP-PAC-S2 has four configurable serial ports. If configured as RS-232, the ports
can have full handshaking. As RS-485, it can be 2-wire or 4-wire.
So which PAC should you use? RS-485 is typically used with SNAP serial brains or legacy mistic I/O.
If you have lots of these, you'll want to use the S2. Otherwise the less expensive S1 is fine.
