>> Voiceover: Seymour High School student Kristen Gainey shows children a quick science project
as part of the Governor's School for Prospective Teachers.
>> Kristen Gainey: It's been a lot of fun. We've learned what it's like
to be a teacher for elementary and middle school age kids.
We learned a lot of things we didn't know about teachers,
like what it takes to be a teacher and what teachers have to do.
>> Voiceover: Gainey and 26 other high school students from across Tennessee
are participating in the 5 week summer program held at UTC.
About 120 students submitted applications,
but only 27 were accepted.
(natural sound of students and teachers interacting)
>> Voiceover: Students take teacher preparation classes and have the opportunity
to talk to experienced teachers about the profession.
They also get hands on classroom experience by planning lessons
and teaching students for a week.
>> Gainey: I'd recommend it for anyone who is interested in teaching,
you may find you want to be a teacher,
and you may find that you don't want to be a teacher so, it helps a lot.
>> Voiceover: The State of Tennessee provides twelve summer programs
for gifted and talented high school students.
UTC is the only campus that offers the Governor's School for Prospective Teachers.
