My absolute favorite thing about K-State is the environment that every new student feels
the first day they are here. This is one of the most friendly campuses anywhere in the
nation. As a transfer student, I can attest to that.
Definitely one of my favorite experiences at K-State has been getting involved with
SGA, the Student Governing Association. I had the opportunity to represent my college
and vote on behalf of the students in my college, as well as be on the executive committee for
SGA. I was the treasurer so I got to do a lot of stuff with money and helping different
groups on campus to put on different events and trips, and things like that. I got a lot
of connections on campus through that.
Take a chance and get involved. Take the time to do some clubs, organizations, go to games,
intramurals; get the real collegiate experience, the K-State experience. I think our atmosphere
is unique here, and I think that if you take the time to get involved and meet people,
your experience will be more incredible than you could ever imagine.
What I've noticed at K-State is that you actually are able to get involved in leadership opportunities
as a freshman or sophomore. Through the residence halls, my first one was on a hall governing
board. I went to my first HGB meeting and I said, "OK," and they said, "We have an open
spot on our exec board." I was the only person there that wasn't already on it or a floor
president, so I said, "OK, I'll do it!" That early opportunity provided me with so many
others, like leadership ambassadors, and I learned about all these different opportunities
as a freshman. People weren't saying, "Oh, you're just a freshman, you're not able to
do that." The older people, rather than looking down on you at K-State, what they do is say,
"OK, let me tell you what I've learned through my leadership experiences." They help mentor
you in that way, so that's definitely something I love about K-State.
I would say K-State has prepared me for life just because it's really helped me figure
out who I am as a person. The past four and a half years I feel like I've been on an academic
journey, but also somewhat of a self-discovery journey. K-State really values your individuality
and values what you bring to the table as a person, so they're really supportive as
you go about this process of not only learning from your major, but learning more about yourself.
My advice for any incoming freshman or anyone considering going to K-State is that you need
to get involved. The first week you get here there is the Activities Carnival. Go join
a club, join a sorority or fraternity, or join anything. There are lots of activities
on this campus that can help you meet a lot of friends -- I know that's something that
people are nervous about going to a big school. And learn to enjoy purple. It's the best color
out there.
Enjoy your time while you're here because it goes really quickly. Four and a half years
goes by like that, or four if you're lucky, so enjoy it.
