In this video, I am going to show you how to sand and polish a timber floor. We will
go through two major steps. Firstly, we will prepare the floor. Then we will sand the floor.
The tools and materials we will use for this job are a medium-weight clawed hammer, a flooring
punch, a putty knife, a safety knife, a drawer scrapper, a shifting spanner and a wood filler.
Sanding discs in the weight of 40 60, 80, and 120. We will also need a sanding pad and
for our round sanding discs, we usually recommend 60-grip disc.
As a cutting aid, we use kerosene to spray on the wood and we use mentholated spirits
to de-oil the wood and from the hire shop, we'll need a drum sander and an edge sander.
The safety equipment we will need are earmuffs, knee pads, s a face mask and safety glasses.
So let's get started. The first step is to prepare the floor. This means we simply look
at the floor to see if there are any areas of damage that needs repairing. A typical
item is a gumming inclusion inline. If we don't like it and we want it removed, we need
to scratch out gum. The next thing we have to do is to knock every nail down at least
two millimetres. Give it two swift hits to know it down.
We go across the entire floor knocking every single nail down. Having prepared the floor,
we look at the drum sander. If I open up this guard, we can actually see the actual drum
in the drum sander. The abrasive cylinder slides on the drum. To make sure we get it
on the right way we have an arrow pointing to the floor on the machine and we have an
arrow inside the cylinder.
Okay, so my arrow is pointing in the right direction. I can slide my cylinder on. Once
we have applied the cylinder, we simple close the guard to put it into action. It's now
time to put our cutting agent on the floor. I put a glove on this hand because the easy
way to apply the kerosene is to simply make crocodile tears on the floor and stop our
cylinder clogging up.
Before we start, we need to just check the paper bag that collects the saw dust is on
nice and tight and the rubber band is pushed hard down. You don't actually need a face
mask when you have the paper bag in place but you will need the ear muffs when you are
working in an enclosed space. Before I will use the machine I will bring your attention
to this little black ***. You got to learn to lower this to the floor gently. If you
let it go too fast you will put a big divot in the floor. And if you want to stop, you
must pull it back.
Now the machine must always go forward. It is never to be used cutting by pulling it
backwards. So, when we sand one direction we turn around and come back, we turn around
again and go in the opposite direction to pick up that edge. Having done the drum sanding,
we have now done the whole body of the floor except the extreme periphery of the floor.
We can't get into the edges; we need a different machine for that. We need the edge sander.
Now before we actually use it, once again, we have got to put our cutting agent on the
floor. So we would go across the floor and simply wet it down to assist the cutting action.
One guides it down the floor. The only piece we haven't done is the in the very corner
of the room. So we use a drawer scraper. So we now have got right into the corner. We
have finished the first cut. Before we start the second sanding cut, we need to fill in
the nail holes. When we pick a drop of wood filler on the end, place it over the hole
and bend the steel to push the putty down the hole. It takes about 15 minutes to dry
in a nail hole, longer for bigger repairs.
After we've filled the nail holes, we can go ahead with the second and third sanding
coats. This is done the same as the first coat. Then we rub wood hard with abrasives
the oil comes to the `surface. We need to get rid of that, because it can become a barrier
to any further coats of paint or what have you. We put out methyl on the rag and we simply
go over the floor. There is the colour the floor is going to end up. It's what it's going
to look like. And very quickly, we are going over the floor and removing any oils on the
surface. In a few moments it will be dry and bleached. It will look lighter than it did
before we done this. The reason is, we've taken the oil away. Now we've finished out
sanding and polishing process. If you need more information visit your local Bunnings
