I am now outside
the, er, ubiquitous
(they're everywhere that I have lived in anyway)
Curry House.
Here's a big sign above my head here,
Its called the Coco Ichiban(ya)
which means "the best here"
or "here's the best" perhaps,
"the best around here" maybe.
And they are very good, or I like them,
but they take some getting used to
because they are not,
while they're a curry house
they're not what a British person would call a curry house.
So, what's the difference?
The difference is
Well, first of all the writing is in Japanese,
but above the door there
Maybe I can zoom in with my free hand,
it even says..
the slogan of the CoCoIchiban
[They're even writing their name in English letters there]
is "Good Smell, Good Curry."
The biggest differene though,
is the curry inself
the curry is umm...
in some ways it is more like Indian curry
this [behind] isn't very representative
because it has large lumps of vegitable inside it
this is a vegitable curry
but you can see that the vegitables are
swimming in, what might be called, a sort of
curry soup
there's also a deep fried cutlet
that's a traditional(?) Japanese pork cutlet, that I believe,
resting on top of the rice
which is in the top part of the picture
Ahh, the characteristic bits are that
the Japanese curry is rather like soup
And in fact Indian curry is more like soup
than British curry
which is more like a curry flavoured stew
I would say, British curry (=) curry flavoured stew
Japanese curry is more like a curry flavoured soup
but the, um, perculiar thing about it is
the taste, its not all that curried.
they're rather sweet.
It's like, um, a sweet gravy,
almost a sort of, a custardy curry...
Custard and Rice!
That's what I first thought when I tried it.
But you [people] get used to it.
And also,
they have a whole variety of hotnesses
that is spicey err...
You can set the spice,
between one and ten or something
and they just add extra spice into there.
The spice isn't a very nice spice
it's just a hot chilli flavour,
rather than being a full-bodied spiciness
But you can make it er,
Sort of, make it take the skin off the roof of your mouth,
if you want to.
And mummies curry is,
a soupy, er I don't know what's in there,
oh, a soupy mushroom curry.
but she has also ordered some deep fried...
[Kuroketto] crockett potato
deep fried crockett potato
as well as her soupy mushroom custard.
Cream crottett [Da sou desu]
[And I didn't]
Ray's curry is a er,
a blob of rice in the custard soupy curry thing
and it's very sweet 'n
only very slightly curry flavoured.
And it's also got some hamburger
a little sausage and some corn in there,
because, well, that's what in the kiddies curry.
And is it good? Is it yummy?
Yummy, Ray likes curry don't you ray.
Yummy [yummy]
My curry is a...
an asparagus, no not asparagus
I've forgotten the name of them.
What does Popeye eat?
Spinach! Spinach custardy soupy curry,
with seafood
rice on the side
and some pickles
And I have mine er, three times
more spicey than the average Japanese person.
And........Yummy
