Never doubt that in addition to all its basic and intrinsic value, just all the reasons
why people like Ken and Dave and all of us want to protect as much of our natural beauty
as we can, this is an addition, an enhancement to the quality of life in this state. And
it comes up when we’re trying to bring jobs here. People know that our parks are beautiful
and that we’re pushing ahead in this area. To each of you, I can’t imagine all the
work and probably all the setbacks and moments of anxiety and so forth you must have had
over the years, but thanks for never giving up and never letting go of that image you
had of what could be. And it dawned on me, boy there are so many other ways people serve
Indiana other than political office. So I decided let’s take down at least that one
wall, take some dead politicians down, and let’s put up some people who have done great
things in other walks of life. Gene Stratton-Porter was there for quite a while. And one good
thing about this little practice of mine is that it always impels me to go learn more
than I knew to start with. And it was a joy to learn more about her and her work. We’ve
been a member of more than one great occasion up at her house. So I think she’d be real
happy today. I think she’d really be smiling on Ken Brunswick and Dave and each of you
for this big step forward and I think it’s fitting given her place in the history of
conservation and the cause in our state that we happen to roll up on number 250 at this
place that she obviously loved and told so many other people about.
>> On behalf of friends of the Limberlost and the local area and Nature Preserves, we’d
like to present that to you. >> Well thank you. I’ll find a place of
honor for it. Congratulations.
