Manga is the japanese word for cartoons
And it is an own form of art
It stands out from the cartoons we find in the Western countries
In the way it's drawn, written and the way the storyline is written
Let's go way back in time to when the first manga was created
Manga was first published by the japanese artist, Katsushika Hokusai
Between year 1814-1879
Back then, manga was simply drawn
Because Hokusai wanted to focus on the idea of manga, more than the smaller details
Even though the art was simple, the stories had a deeper meaning
Everything from historical figures, Gods, monsters, nature and animals
Approximately hundred years later, in 1947, was Japan under difficult circumstances
Because of the II World War
An artist called Osamu Tesuka
Gave out his manga Shintaka Rajima, which became a big success
More than 400.000 kopies were sold in Japan
He then later on published other mangas
That became the beginning of modern manga and its popularity
Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse and Bambi were a big inspiration for Tesuka
Today, Tezuka is known as "The father of Manga"
Later on, two forms of publications of manga was created
The first one was "Manga" which was either published weekly or monthly
And it had very strict deadlines
Because of the little time they had,
Artists made the art very simple, with a lot of exaggeration
Like characters with big, round eyes
Which is one of the characteristics of manga
Tesuka is the one that made this a trend
The other form of publication was Gegika, that didn't have any deadlines
This made the art and story more comlex with a lot of details
This form was seen as superior
In 17th century Gegika gradually dissappeard, but didn't completely dissappear
(Genres and target audience)
Just like books, manga has different genres and theme audiences
Some may be about love/romance
