>> Jerome: My critics say that Novato is not a sanctuary city, but that doesn’t mean
that it isn’t.
We don’t need a banner on the entrance off 101 that says SANCTUARY. What you have to
do is establish whether the policies of the City Council an Police Chief constitutes sanctuary
status.
The City Council has continued to invite illegal alien laborers to Novato by refusing to enact
the E-verify ordinance, which would screen new hires for a legal right to work in this
country. If there is no screening, then there is no incentive for the illegals not to come
here. And they will certainly come where they are welcome.
In addition, the Police Department, at the direction of City Council, has made numerous
exemptions for the illegal aliens. The Police Chief refuses to impound and auction vehicles
siezed from illegal aliens who are driving without ever having been given a driver license,
and who are stopped for traffic violations. And that’s mandated by state law. It’s
not optional.
If illegal aliens and their gang members do not have vehicles in which to drive, they
don’t have the ability to conduct drive-by shootings, or to bring drugs and weapons into
Novato as they do regularly.
We had an arrest on Sunset Parkway this year where four illegal aliens were found to have
two shotguns, a machete, a baseball bat and drugs in the car. And I believe that four
of them have plead guilty and the other one wants a trial. So we are not even contesting
whether this is a fact or not.
