The Tuesday, October 8, 2013 general board meeting for the Santa Barbara Unified School
District. We will begin our board meeting with the flag salute. Dr. Cash, will you do
us the honor please? Please stand. Begin. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United
States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all. (Spanish translation is available.) We also have headsets
for the hearing impaired, if anybody is in need of those. I would also like to let everyone
know that we do have a television in the back room so if you're feeling a little too scrunched
here, it's a whopping 50 feet away, but if someone feels more comfortable and would like
to sit down there is television access there and you'll be able to hear the meeting as
well. Alright, so we will begin our meeting with the Superintendent's reports, proclamations
and introductions. Thank you very much President Limon, at this time I would like to introduce
Santa Barbara High School ASB member and senior Jacqueline Ibarra is here to provide the student
report. I hope. Oh there she is. Hi, come on up Jacquie. OK. Hi, I'm Jacqueline Ibarra,
I'll be representing Santa Barbara High today, we just have a few updates and announcements.
Homecoming was last Saturday it was very successful, we had over a thousand students attend. The
theme was Hollywood, and at that Homecoming football game we beat Pacifica 41 to 28 and
we had our senior sunrise last Thursday, where local bakeries donated all types of desserts
and we all got our senior shirts and got the senior class ready for 2014 and we also had
our alumni tours which our ASB students gave, and we had the class of 1939 come and visit, that
was really fun and this week we have, or next week we have our spirit week for Halloween,
Harry Potter day, our carnival, our PEP rally, to get us pumped against San Marcos, and yeah,
that's all I have for this update. Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you. This Friday
will be an exciting day for sports fans, Santa Barbara High School will be holding a ribbon
cutting for the newly renovated JR Richards Gymnasium. Some pretty incredible alumni will
be joining us there, Jamal Wilkes, Karch Kiraly, Holly Ford Emerson, Don Ford and Vic Bartolome
will return to the school to celebrate the completion of the one million dollar renovation.
It's set for 11a.m. inside the gym and the community is welcome to attend. The public
is also invited to next Thursday, October 17 a Lights On Afterschool which is a celebration
of all the after school programs and focuses on teaching children and their families how
to protect themselves in the event of an emergency. And that will be the 17th from 5 o'clock to
7 o'clock at Franklin Elementary School. Also on October 17 is the Great American Shakeout.
And all of our schools will be participating. And in fact we're very fortunate 'cause the
local Red Cross is going to be working with one of our schools, Washington Elementary
School, and they'll be monitoring their readiness during the Shakeout and that's always been
a tremendous amount of information for us to get to help us insure that we're doing
everything that we can in case of an emergency.
