I'm Jess Pendlebury
and I'm doing a school-based apprenticeship
in Cert IV Veterinary Nursing.
In Year 10, I did Certificate II in Animal Studies
and I loved it
but at the end of it, there was nothing else I could do.
I couldn't do anything until I finished school.
And so, I decided that I'd annoy people as much as I could
and eventually was allowed to do Cert IV.
I really just turned 17
and at the start of next year, I'll be a fully qualified vet nurse.
It has been an awesome achievement for myself
and the TAFE and the school and everyone involved.
I'm a really hands-on learner
and at work I'm earning while I'm learning
which is really great and a great opportunity.
Last year, I won Australian School-based Apprentice of the Year.
Being a part of it has been really great
and I've been able to meet so many amazing people
and explaining my story and why I think
people should do school-based apprenticeships.
I really think that clinics should invest in school-based apprentices
like myself, there's no harm in doing it.
You're getting people who really want to be in the industry
and really want to be a part of it, even if they're from a young age.
If anyone was interested in an apprenticeship, go for it.
There's nothing that's going to hinder what you're doing at school.
It's really an amazing opportunity and you should really take it up.
