Thank you for taking a tour of our birthing center.
We're so happy for you and your family as you make plans to welcome your new little one.
Hi! I'm Zabrina, a Birthing Center tour leader.
Let me show you around so you know exactly what to expect.
It's important to us that you feel as prepared
and comfortable as possible when you arrive to have your baby.
There'll be a lot of excitement that day so for a fast, easy admittance, be sure to
pre-register on our website. Then when your labor begins, call your physician
or nurse midwife. If they tell you it's time, please call
the hospital so we can prepare for you.
When you arrive use our valet parking services when available, and take the North elevators
to the 4th floor. Here our friendly staff will greet you and
guide you into a private triage room like this.
Right here in this room our friendly staff will take your vitals, listen to baby's
heartbeat, assess your contractions, and if needed, do a cervical exam.
If you and baby are ready to go, we'll take you to a private birthing suite.
There's a family lounge on every floor of our birthing center.
If you have asked your loved ones to be at the hospital while you await baby's arrival,
this is a comfortable place where they can watch TV, surf the Internet, let children
play, and get a snack from vending machines. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hospital.
While your family enjoys the lounge, you'll be getting ready for baby's arrival in a
private birthing suite. Please bring along with you anything that
helps you feel at home such as pillows, robes, footwear, toiletries, and if you'd like,
even a video camera. We want you to be as relaxed as possible here
throughout labor and delivery, so in each room you can regulate your environment with
temperature control and dimmer lights. You can see there's also a rocker, and in
case you stay overnight, a sleeper sofa for your support person.
Each room also has a private bathroom. In here you can rest in this soaking tub to
help promote comfort during labor.
If you want to take your mind off of labor with some entertainment, bring some movies!
Each room has a DVD player. Or if you'd prefer to prepare for baby,
ask your nurse for the car seat safety DVD, or watch the 24-hour Newborn Channel in English
or Spanish. There's a program guide at your bedside.
You could also bring along or ask for our First Weeks Book.
It has great information to help you with those first weeks of taking care of baby.
Once you get settled into your birthing room, your labor nurse will be there to help you
every step of the way throughout your labor and delivery, regularly checking on your progress.
Depending on the length of your labor, you may have more than one nurse.
We understand this is your special moment so your nurse will review your plans and requests
for your birth. You can complete a sample birth plan on our
website so we can customize your care to meet your needs.
If you're able, we encourage you to do some walking to keep your labor progressing.
You may also have an I.V. or fetal monitor during your labor.
Your nurse will try to promote your comfort during labor offering you options such as
changing positions, soaking in the tub, warm or cold packs, birthing balls, back rubs,
or medications. Epidural anesthesia is also available.
All the equipment for your baby's birth is right here in your birthing suite.
So it's readily available when baby begins to make an appearance!
Not all expectant moms want a traditional birth.
For those who request a water birth, we have two water birthing rooms.
You can see, it's similar to our birthing suites; but instead of a bed, you'll deliver
in this specially designed birthing tub. Many moms who choose this method feel that
it makes the delivery more comfortable. If you're interested in a water birth, it's
important for you to talk with your health care provider well in advance of your due date.
In some cases, whether planned or unexpected, a C-section is necessary for a safe delivery.
Our specialized C-section birthing suites are designed and equipped specifically for
this surgery. Inside this room, our skilled staff have all
the tools to give you and baby the safest and gentlest care possible.
During a C-section, one support person may be with you.
We'll help them get ready to go with you by providing scrubs to wear and showing them
how to wash their hands with a special soap. It's all for your safety and the safety
of your baby. If your support person isn't comfortable
being here for this surgery, they may want to wait in the recovery area or lounge.
Once baby is delivered, they may take pictures and hold your new baby.
After a C-section, mom will be in the recovery room for about 2 hours.
Here you may have two support people with you, 14 years or older.
Your support person may briefly show off your sweet little one to family and friends, waiting
in the lounge.
As we've seen, there are several ways that you may deliver; but if for any reason we
believe baby will need specialized care, staff from our on-site Newborn Intensive Care Unit
or NICU will be in your room for the delivery. Then if needed baby can go directly to our
state of the art NICU right here in the birthing center.
Our board certified neonatologists and skilled, caring staff are equipped to treat baby for
any medical concerns -- from premature birth to sickness.
While most babies are born without any need for specialized care, it's vital and reassuring,
that help is here should baby need it.
When your baby is born, and if there are no complications, you and your baby can be together
for the first time right away. We will help you hold your newborn skin-to-skin,
begin bonding, and enjoy those precious first moments together.
We will check baby's vital signs closely for several hours.
When we know baby is stable, it's bath time; and you can enjoy it too right there by your bedside!
You can dress your baby in your own baby clothes; or the hospital can provide them during your
stay, along with cloth diapers if you choose not to use disposable ones.
Supplies to care for your newborn are all in the drawers of your baby's mobile bassinet.
While you're getting to know and care for your new little one, please tell your nurse
about any discomfort after delivery. We can help with pain medication or offer other relief options.
If you plan to breastfeed, you should begin within the first hour after birth even after
a C-Section. All of our nurses have extensive training
in breastfeeding support and will help you get started.
Should you need breastfeeding help beyond what our nurses can provide, lactation consultants
are available.
A few hours after birth, you and your family will be escorted to a comfortable, private
room on a different floor in our Family Care Center.
You'll take elevators used exclusively by patients of the birthing center.
Each room in our family care center was designed with your family's needs and comfort in
mind. There's space for your belongings, a private
bathroom, a comfortable bed for mom, a bassinet for baby, a fold out sleeper sofa for your
support person, and a widescreen TV.
After all that hard work and excitement of having a baby, we know you're probably hungry,
so we have some healthy snacks available anytime in our Mother's Nutrition Room; or you can
order meals from the hospital kitchen. There's a menu in your room.
If you have a specialized diet, feel free to bring your own food.
For family and friends, we provide water and coffee; or they can purchase food in the cafeteria
and coffee shop. Several area restaurants also deliver to the hospital.
We're committed to providing the best care possible for your growing family.
Throughout your hospital stay our nurses will work with you side-by-side, helping you learn
how to care for your baby and yourself during this time of transition.
Care is provided in your room where you and your baby stay together.
Spending as much time as possible with your baby in those first hours and days, with your
nurse to assist you as needed, means the better connected you'll be as a family, and the
more prepared you'll be to care for baby at home.
We are also very proud to be Madison's only hospital designated baby-friendly by the World
Health Organization. Currently a very small percent of births occur
in Baby-Friendly designated facilities in the US -- and we're one of them!
You can recover with a peace of mind knowing that we take the safety and security of your
little one very seriously. Every family has 4 ID bands. Two go on baby
immediately after birth. One goes on mom, and the other on your support person.
A security tag is also placed on baby's umbilical cord shortly after birth.
All of our staff members wear photo ID badges. Before you give someone your baby always ask
to see an ID. We also encourage you to keep your baby with
you or your support person at all times. If you leave your room, take your baby along
in the bassinet; and while you're sleeping or in the bathroom, put your baby in the bassinet
and close the door to your room for added privacy and security.
The average hospital stay is 2 days. For a C-section, the typical stay is 3 to
4 days. On the day you and baby go home, please plan
to leave by noon and have clothes, blankets, and diapers for your baby.
Bring your car seat the day before you go home so your nurse can help you adjust it
properly. To be best prepared, we recommend you call
and make an appointment for a free car seat inspection before baby is born.
As you prepare to go home with baby, we want you to leave here feeling confident, with
the knowledge and the tools, to care for and enjoy your precious little one.
If you have any questions in those first days home with your newborn please remember we're
still here to help. You can also visit our website to register
for a class or to meet our pediatricians. Thank you taking the time to tour the Birthing
Center. We hope you feel more confident and prepared
for that special day when you finally get to hold your new son or daughter in your arms.
We look forward to meeting you and caring for you, as you welcome your new bundle of
joy into your family!
