The United Nations is calling on the international community to provide six-and-a-half billion
U.S. dollars worth of humanitarian aid to civil war-ravaged Syria. UN estimates, which
coincide with a new study by the international Rescue Committee, say nearly three quarters
of the Syrian population will need humanitarian aid in 2014. This appeal exceeds the last
UN appeal for 4-point-4 billion dollars in June, of which only 60 percent has been received
so far. The UN says 2-point-3 billion dollars is needed to help civilians inside Syria,
while the rest would be distributed to help Syrian refugees in neighboring countries.
The report warns that many people are at risk of starvation with bread prices inflating
by 500 percent in some areas.
