Alright, this is John Kohler with okraw.com. Today I have another exciting episode for
you. We're all the way here, big island in Hawaii, of the hanaka side actually. Beautiful
farm, at today. There's just acres of food. I mean, this is not a food forest; this is
a food jungle, man. It is so crazy going off. There's like all different kinds of varieties
of sugar came. Here we got some kind of variegated sweet variety that's nice and tender for chewing
on and what we're going to do in this episode is actually share with you guys some information
about the true sugar. It's not that white sugar crap in a box or however you get it.
I mean, this is true sugar cane. This is how nature intended us to eat it. The first way
we're going to show you is we're going to show you how to knot up right with your teeth,
man, as nature intended, no man-made equipment required, and then after that, we're going
to show you how to juice the stuff and have some of the best most delicious beverage in
the world. We got coconut Chris here who tends all this beautiful land, made this whole place
happen, he's cutting down the cane, he's selecting only the best and sweetest one, for me, the
guest, today, to harvest so that we can chew it on up. Super easy to harvest, you just
cut it down. You got to make sure the node spacing is proper so it's fully mature and
not too young, not too old, but just right. He's going to like take some of the top off
that you don't eat and then we're going to come over and we're going to have a sugar
cane party. Now, what coconut Chris is doing, he's taking sugar cane, which is called puaole.
It means the sugar cane that does not flower. Nice variegated variety, he's basically going
to break it in half, and you don't need no machete to do this, man, we're men. Real men
don't need machetes, at least not to break the sugarcane in half. So, check it out. What
he's going to do, he's going to snap it with his knee right in half. Check it out. Oh,
man, the water, the liquid, it's literally dripping out, that stuff is so wet. Next thing
he's going to do he's going to crack so we can basically get eh nice juicy center innards
out. Let me see if I can do that stuff. Snapped it in half. Alright, so once you got it in
half, then you're basically going to snap and tap. So, now we're going to tap, but we
ain't tappin', we hittin' this. Boom, boom, boom. Breaking that up. I broke it in half.
Check it out, but what we want to do is basically break this up so we can peel this back. We're
just peeling off the outer husk part, check it out, to get down to the rich middle. That's
all juicy. Watch this, man. I'm going to take this off in my hand. Look at that juice squeezing
out. This is so juicy. My hand is the juicer, right? Alright, man. He's just having fun
juicing the cane with his teeth. Check it out, man. In the Philippians, they're too
poor to buy toothbrushes so they just use this sugarcane. This is fibrous. You're thinking,
'John, sugar rots your teeth.' It's the sugar in your mouth that feeds the bacteria that
then poops and gets their acid poop on your teeth that rots your teeth when you don't
brush your teeth, but if you eat a high fiber diet. I mean, sugarcane is sugar water and
fiber, switch that around after you've gotten all the sugar out to get it all the different
areas to brush your teeth naturally. You wouldn't need a toothbrush and you wouldn't get cavities.
So, this is the top of the cane that actually we didn't eat 'cause it's not as sweet. It's
sweeter down near the bottom, but the good thing to do with this is to replant your cane,
right? If you harvest all your cane, eat it, you wont have any more, but just take the
tops you're not eating anyway 'cause it's sweet, and you guys can see it's actually
sprouting up new little buds right there. What you're going to do is you're just going
to take this, lay it on the ground like this direction. These guys will basically start
growing up, it'll send root hair out, and this'll turn into a new can field. Each one
of these guys will grow into a new upshot and provide you with can in years to come.
What we're going to do next now, after showing you guys how to *** the cane, plant the cane,
we're going to show you guys how to juice the cane with an electric juicer to really
get that sugar rush you've been looking for instead of soda. The last thing before you
leave Hawaii, you got to get some fresh sugarcane juice, you know. Not some frozen thawed out
crap that you buy at stores, but fresh stuff. So, I had to come to the farm to get it. We
got some awesome sugarcane, many different varieties growing behind us. You can see the
purple kind. This stuff is like a super sweet, super delicious, looking really nice, and
for those of you guys that don't know, they make sugar, like white sugar, out of sugar
cane, but they cook the hell out of it. You guys want to eat your foods raw, you know,
with the water content as full as possible. It'd actually be best to gran the sugar cane,
chop it up, chew it in your mouth, and just spit the pulp out. I'm a little but lazy to
get the juice out that way, got other things to do like catch my flight later, so what
we chopped a bunch, washed it all up and made sure there's no worm in it, split it in half,
and now we're juicing it up. So, here's the last bit of sugarcane going through the juicer.
Here's Chris here, hacking the sugarcane up, splitting it in half to ensure there's no
worm sin the middle. So, check that out, inspect it, nothing in there, then he'll just run
it through that juicer right there, squeezing all that delicious sugarcane juice. Check
it out, it's pumping out. He's been juicing so much sugarcane, it goes to a little screen
there, it goes through the center right into this 5-gallon water container. Check it out,
man, that's like a quarter of the way full. Delicious sugarcane juice, straight up. Nothing
better than that, man. Don't be drinking soda, drunk sugarcane juice, nature's soda, not
some crap in a can, man. Here it is, coming out, look at that. Squeezing the bejebes out
of the sugarcane, but remember, don't put your finger in there. So, we got some sugarcane
juice poured out in a cup. I'm going to try it for you guys in the video. Man, you got
to come to Hawaii to try this. Like fresh sugarcane, literally from harvest to juicer
in 5 minutes. Once it's out of the juicer, in the glass, drink it right up. So delicious.
Now, here's the thing, right? Check this out. Once you make the sugarcane juice, you got
to drink it fast. Even if you put it in the fridge overnight, the flavor starts to change,
it starts to go bad, it starts go rancid, right? We need to be consuming our foods as
quickly as possible after harvest, especially after, you know, fracturing the cell walls,
like with the juicer and stuff like that. In addition, what I want to tell you guys,
look at the color on that. You guys see the color on that? It's nice and dark, right?
It's not the same color as when you buy white sugar crystals in the store. It's been highly
processed, right? They extract only the sugar content and leave everything else behind.
In this sugarcane juice, we got basically the sugarcane, everything except the fiber.
We got all 90 plus minerals because grasses absorb all the minerals in the earth. So,
this is very, I mean, why is wheatgrass so good? It's a grass. Sugarcane it also grass.
Absorb all the minerals, and when you're drinking it in this form, you're getting the water,
you're getting the nutrients, you're getting the phytochemicals, the phytonutrients, the
vitamins and the minerals all n one package as nature intended, like as if you took it
off the plant, chewed it in your mouth, and spit out the pulp. I'm a little but lazy,
so we're letting the juicer do that. This is the best way to consumer sugar in the whole
wide world. You definitely want to consume sugar in this way and not from a package that
got the industry involved, and the industry's only it in for one thing, and it's not for
your health. It's to make money. After the first pressing, you could basically, you'll
take 2 of them, like a stick them together and make them, you know, together and then
put it back through the machine to wring our even more juice, and this will yield more
stuff, but the second pressing juice doesn't quite taste the same as the first pressing.
On the second pressing, it looks like it got stuck, actually, so, you know, that can happen
to you if you're doing second press on there, and you got to basically manual back it off.
That's why it's better to do a first pressing only and not mess with the second stuff, plus,
check it out. We're juicing a lot of this second pressing stuff and it's juicing, and
we're getting only a little bit of juice but not even that much juice because the juicers
so efficient. There is it coming out, second pressing, this stuff is dry as saw dust now.
Look at that. Here's the juice form the second pressing. The second pressing only yielded
10% more juice in the juicer setup and the way we're juicing today. Of course, you know,
the second pressing may yield more or less, depending on the type of cane, if it's fresh,
if it's really wet, if it's dry, and how close the rollers are on your sugarcane juicer.
It's right here. This is a bit more foamy than the first pressing, but I'm going to
see and taste the difference. The first pressing was absolutely delicious. Let's see how the
second pressing straight up compares. It's like not quite as like clean tasting. It's
like maybe got a bit more particulates and a little bit, I don't know, not as sweet.
Maybe a little but more stronger tasting. So, if you mix these 2 together, it'd probably
be a really nice balance, but I'm definitely a first press person, man. So, besides the
straight sugarcane juice we had, now we're going to spice it up a little bit, check it
out/ We're putting tubers in there. Tubers really add that...the best root vegetable...and
then also we're going to throw in some lemon in there. That should be so delicious. Some
nice delicious lemon juice. Check it out...Particulates...delicious high anti-oxidant rich, mineral rich, sugar
cane. So, now we've got the trifecta going on. We got the first pressing mixed with the
second pressing, plus the turmeric, plus the lemon juice, right here. I'm going to try
it for you guys first on the camera. Man, that's the best of them all. So, next time
you go in tat shop that's selling sugarcane juice, demand they give you turmeric, lemon,
and sugarcane. I'm always about taking it up another level. So, if you want to take
this to the next level, although I usually like to keep this really simple and have minimal
ingredients in the food I'm eating, you an add the purple lilycoy. Take the purple lilycoy,
and squeeze it right in there. Look at that. This is going to be the bomb. That's heaven
to my mouth. I've never tasted anything so good. So fresh, all these ingredients growing
fresh right here on the farm. Super delicious. Oh my god, this gives it like that sour sweet
passion fruit taste, and it gives me that passion to make more videos for you guys.
I want to give you guys a tip, man. If you guys are looking for a sugarcane juicer, they
can get expensive. The hand-crank ones are cheaper, but you want to be wary, you know.
There's a lot of cheap sugarcane juicers something out of china and they're just not the same
quality as like the unit we're looking at here. This is from Thailand. Much higher quality.
I'd recommend the Thai one before the Chinese one. They can be found online, sometimes for
the Chinese ones, as low as like $350 delivered, actually. Here's what this guy look like.
I'm going to give you guys a website. It's ngowhuatyoo.com and I can't read Thai. When
you're juicing outside with sugarcane juicers, cleanup is a breeze. Check it out. Take the
hose, hose that bad boy down, run that hose all the way through there, water just drains
and waters the plants. So, grow your own sugarcane, juice it and enjoy it. There's over 20 varieties
of sugarcane growing here and they each taste different. Like different flavors of soda,
there's different flavors of sugarcane. For some fun you could add some fruit juice, juice
some lemon in there, juice some lime in there, juice some turmeric in there, juice some ginger.
I mean, you could do like endless varieties of sugarcane sweetened juices. I did orange
sugarcane the other day at my place and man that was even good. I mean, sugarcane juice
should be the nations sweetener, fresh sugarcane juice. It's the bomb. You definitely want
o try it today. Go somewhere you can totally get it. South Florida, here in Hawaii or some
tropical place. They even grow it in southern California. So, yes, you can grow it in southern
California. I've even been to Sacramento. A buddy in Sacramento's growing it. I have
a video on it. He's growing sugarcane in Sacramento. So, push the envelope, grow some foods, juice
it up, and enjoy fresh, natural foods like nature has provided for us. Hope you guys
enjoyed this quick episode, sharing with you guys about my sugarcane experience here in
big island in Hawaii. Once again, my name is John Kohler with okraw.com. We'll see you
next time, and remember, keep eating your fruits and vegetables, including sugarcane.
They're always the best.
