In this video you will learn how to order a book through RACER at the University of Guelph-Humber.
RACER is the Interlibrary Loan system used by universities throughout Ontario.
This system enables students and faculty to obtain items that are not found in their school's library collection.
If you have previously used RACER before, you should know that in addition to the creation of a new direct link to RACER available on the University of Guelph-Humber's library website...
...in December 2010, RACER's user interface was modified. This video will also cover these changes.
To begin, you will first want to ensure the book is currently not owned by the University of Guelph or any of the other TUG libraries.
To do this, go to the University of Guelph-Humber library homepage.
Click on "Find Books and Videos"
Then scroll down and click Primo.
You will need to log-in using your Guelph Central Login. This is the same as your Gryphmail.
In this example the book I am looking for is the novel Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Japanese author Haruki Murakami.
Unfortunately, neither the University of Guelph nor any of the other TUG Libraries carry this item.
Therefore, in order to obtain a copy we will want to use RACER.
You can access RACER from the University of Guelph-Humber library homepage by clicking on Research.
And then click RACER.
Once here you can click the link titled "Use This Free Service"
To log-in you will need to use the number on top or below the barcode on your student card.
For the password, please input the first ten letters of your last name in lowercase.
And select Guelph as your library.
After logging in, you can put in data such as the title and the author.
You can also limit aspects of your search by factors such as language, format and location.
In this example, we will look for a copy of Haruki Murakami's novel Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World.
And in this case, I can change my search to only books...
...published in English....
...and if I wish, I can also restrict the search by reading level.
You can also limit your search to specific library collections.
However to retrieve the broadest coverage, it is recommended that you leave it on the default setting, which analyzes the collections of all of the participating libraries in Ontario.
The search scours the collections of the university libraries you have selected and retrieves all records of the item.
And in this case, we can see the libraries at York and Toronto contain copies of the book.
To retrieve the book, you will want to click Get It!
However, you should click on either the details button or the title first.
This will enable you to see information about the book, including its availability.
To request the book, you must click Get It!.
You will then come to a page with many areas in red.
Sections labeled in red can be amended according to your specifications.
For example, if you no longer need the book after a specific amount of date, you can change the date.
This may be useful if there is a significant delay in transit.
Your pick-up location should be specified as Guelph-Humber.
To finalize the process, click Request.
You will receive an e-mail from your library's Interlibrary Loan department when the request has arrived...
...as well as if it has been canceled. Books that are requested from any of the TUG libraries via RACER will be automatically canceled.
So please check Primo first before making your RACER request.
Requests may take two to five business days to arrive and can be kept for two weeks.
To cancel a request, you will need to click on My Requests...
...which is also available on the left-hand side under My Account.
To cancel the request, click Cancel.
And then scroll down and click Cancel Request.
Then you can click Sign Out to exit.
