akum,
and good afternoon to all my friends, colleagues and random people on the youtube
today Friday October 5th 2012, a little after 2pm
this is my current project
basically, i am going to paint the top cap of my car engine
on my own
so this is my Honda Civic 1994 model
i had this car since the university days decades ago
and because of the age,
one of the first thing that it suffers is
this engine cover or the engine cap
so that's why i've decided to give it some cosmetic modification to it
so i went to the nearest hardware store and i got myself
some red paint
and i already had some rubber-glove and cloth to keep things clean
but you need a good engine cleaner or a de-greaser
another good alternative is a Thinner
the problem with the thinner is that it is probably too strong
and it probably can cause more harm than good
so a regular good degreaser it is
this is a regular POWER dril and
attached to it is this metal brush
you can get it from any hardware store
but this is a home-made one, so you'd probably can get a better one
if you go to a good hardware store
and of course you need your tools
something to unscrew all the nuts, a screw driver and a hammer probably
and i had the time to go to car accessory or an Auto shop
i got myself some O-Rings and
since i am going to open the engine itself
i need a good Silicon glue
but this is a special Silicon glue
this is a Gasket Silicon glue
so this is the engine cap and i am going
to start to remove it or open it right now
the first rule is
you need to keep things as much as possible
so i am going to use some latex rubber gloves
the engine cover is held by four nuts
those two nuts in front here
just take them off
the other two nuts is way at the back
you need to remove these ignition cables
in order to gain access to the back
then of course you need to
remove those accessory screws that is holding the ignition cables etc.
anything that is attached to the engine cover
just pull it and take it off
in order to remove this hose
you need to release its clamp
just push it and put it in the back here
before removing the hose like that
then you need a good pull
remove the engine cap like that
ok, i am at the back of my house
i needed a good area to clean off and
to remove the grease to remove the engine oil
so i am going to spread a good amount of this degreaser
i specifically bought this degreaser for this project
it costs about US$10
its not that expensive but its not that cheap either
i do not plan to use this thing in the near future
so i am going to use much of it
i am going to waste much of it
just to make sure that every bit of the oil has been removed
after this course of treatment
with these chemical stuff
i am going to wash it with some regular water
after a good wash using the garden water hose
i am going to scrape off the black paint
using the metal brush
you can always use sand-paper or similar material
but it will take a lot of time
you can borrow these power tool
but if you go to hardware store
you would probably find better tools than this
this is a very permative improvised tool
some of you, who are familiar with these stuff
maybe laughing at my brush attached to the hand dril
but this is what i had,
and i am not willing to pay any extra amount of money
for something that i rarely use
after a good round of wash
its not perfect but it should be enough
i need to plug all the holes here
i do not want any of the paint to go inside the engine
after leaving it under the sun
for few minutes to dry completely
then you can start applying the red paint
this is NOT a regular spray paint
this paint has been specifically manufactured or made
to be applied on engine parts
like extreme heat and vibration
and everything that an engine go through
this paint should resist all of those stuff
so i have applied the third layer
after applying each layer,
you should leave it to dry for few minutes
maybe a good 15 to 30 minutes between each application
but because i doing this under the sun
with this heat and a good windy weather like this
so it should dry even more quickly
eventhough i can feel that the paint has not completely dried
the main point is i probably should have gave it more time for this project
i started this project
not realizing that
i had something to do this evening
so i need to speed things up
these are the O-rings
the O-rings spoil easily
that's why i took the chance
to replace the O-rings with new ones (less than US$8)
before you put the new rings,
you need to apply a generous amount of silicon glue
again, this Silicon glue is a specific special kind of silicon glue
its not like the regular Silicon that you can use it to seal a fish-tank or something
this is a specialized Silicon glue
used to seal off the gasket
the local market calls it the Gasket glue
(about US$10)
you can get this at an auto accessory shop
and you have to tell them specifically that you want
to seal off the gaskets
or to seal off engine parts
on the metal counterpart
you have to make sure that
the metal counterparts are clean
i am using a small piece of cloth
with a degreaser or a thinner
i am going to make sure that this area
is clean and free of oil
before i put on the gasket
i have applied this generous amount
of Silicon glue
before putting back the gasket
the gasket is this long rubber thingy
that seals off the oil chamber and
prevents leaking to outside
if you had problems with it,
you can take the chance to replace the gasket
but this gasket is a bit new
i am not going to buy a new one or replace it yet
i am going to apply again this Silicon glue
don't worry if you spilled some of it inside
i have to tell you, it wan't spoil you car
this thingy has been specifically for this purpose
but you need to apply a generous amount of it
to make sure that you provide a good seal
most of my engine leaks occur at the O-rings
everything is done, let's put it back
and again, the enginr cover is held by those four nuts
let's put them together
the weather has suddenly changed,
i do not know weather its going to rain or not
its a little after 5 o'clock
at 7 o'clock i need to go somewhere
i just remembered i have an appointment
after putting everything back together
already it looks great compared to the previous state
put back the engine oil cover
then put back the ignition cables
it looks great but it is not finished yet
the next step is i am going to use this sand paper
to scrape out the Honda logo
using this small piece of sand-paper and a screw driver
i am going to push and scrape off the paint
and i do not know whether you can see this or not
the paint is actually not completely dried or done
and it is always advisable to let the paint COMPLETELY dry
before doing such things
but i am not worried, if things go wrong
i can simply re-do it again
eventhough my car is silver and black as the main theme
i have some red here and some red there
i am proud to say that now i have some red over here also
as you can see the engine cover looks great
eventhough, the paint looks wet
actually, it has not completely dried
probably it would have been a good clean job if
i waited until the paint is completely dry
