what would it take to turn Texas Democratic
we've had a lot of discussions about this Louis in about the
paramount significance that it would have in national elections
if Texas where to go from a reliably RedState to a blue state
think progress has an article by Rui to share a
saying that it talks about this it talks about demographics and really
demographics is one of the main things that is being discussed in the context
of Texas turning blue
I won't give you the exact numbers because they're not particularly
relevant but the
the idea is as the proportion
of texas Residents that is Hispanic
increases it is going to make it more and more difficult because if the
democratic
leaning tendencies up hispanic voters in the united states particularly
outside a Florida where you have a cuban Hispanic element
it's going to make it more and more difficult for republicans to continue
their their stranglehold
in Texas now the issue is that the
I estimates up how quickly there might be
and increased share hispanics in Texas
is not necessarily based in reality some estimates say that it could be
a huge it could be you know over 50 percent very very soon
while others say it's kinda based on outdated data
more realistic would be to think that I maybe it would be
I'm 44 percent up the electorate rather than like 52 or 56
within the next ten or twelve years in either case demographics will be a big
party that
but the other big part in it is going is going to have to be
whether you can actually get turnout or
democrats and Hispanic some Democrats in Texas because it is such a
a reliably red state in terms a boat difference remember texas has such a
large population
that 55 to 45 that ten percent difference
is a lot of people even if it is not that much in terms of percentage point
to some Democrats
don't have high voter turnout in Texas so you need to increase that
in general Hispanics also have lower turnout as a group
then do you other demographic group so
you're gonna need to take the demographic shift Louis
but also leverage than into people actually voting
but there are a lot of above liberal-leaning groups working really
hard in Texas to try to make this happen
a reality there are enough course this is this is
the short term I mean logic suggests that in the long term it will almost
definitely happen
well be the one at the one reason it might not is
republicans know about this and they will try to gerrymander
excuse me redistrict I have to use the politically correct term redistrict
their way
to victory and Rick Perry just a few months ago called for a special session
on redistricting
and they're going to take these methods as far as they can I feel like it's only
delaying the inevitable that
I hope you're right
