Hey guys I'm K
and I'm H
And today we're gonna do a different type of video
There's going to be like a special presentation
of uh... Please say the name
Seo Taiji
He's conmemorating his 25 years uh... as a K-pop idol
and, since
you know, a lot of people don't know who he is
or where he came from
we're planning to do a video to explain
his importance
his importance in what's K-Pop
and, you know, explain how his like...
he influenced K-pop
and how K-pop started
how...
-What is K-pop? -how important he is
cause that's the important part
we all like it, we all listen to the groups and everything
but we don't know where it came from
or we do when we see it from like wikipedia
we're just gonna explain it, like a general idea.
And this is gonna be our first video for our new series
called "Kpopology"
we will explain furthermore other aspects of K-Pop.
Yeah, so, this is our first video, we're going to explain like
the origin and how it started so
let's just start with that.
As a basic explanation
you know, you can go into wikipedia
or like the basic google...
search definition that comes out
and it's gonna tell you
"K-Pop is..."
obviously, as the word says, Korean Pop
but like
K-Pop is different from normal pop
because it usually combines elements of
dancing and a lot of singing
and well, sometimes with rap and stuff so
it makes
the music
and the singing like
it's a combination of visual things.
Also, it's not only like
one type of music
it involves multiple genres
like R&B,
pop obviously,
ballads,
hip hop, jazz,
etc., so.
It's usually a lot of pop elements, as the word says
which is like, the influence from western culture.
Well, the genre came to happen when
Seo Taiji & Boys came out
they came out in 1992
and they integrated this new Korean music
with a lot of western influences and well
in that time were foreign elements
they currently made like, the mark in K-Pop world
and that's how it all started.
Seo Taiji & Boys were the pioneers in this, yeah?
They were a trio that debuted on
MBC's Show
and they had the song called "Nan Arayo (난 알아요)" .
The song had, like we said, foreign elements
and new types of like uh... elements for the K-Pop
oh well, there's wasn't K-Pop yet
it was for the music industry from then
And... Because the concept was new
they got the lowest score from the jury
but the album
was so popular because of the new elements
and the new like... music
and the new combinations that
sold a lot, and
it started marking a different time for them
so that's how it all started.
After Seo Taiji & Boys
there were other groups that started
following this wave
like, Yoo Seungjun
Jinusean
DEUX
1TYM
and Drunken Tiger.
After this
In 1995
South Korean producer Lee Sooman
founded what we know today as
SM Entertainment
Then, in 1996
former member of Seo Taiji & Boys
Yang Hyungsuk
formed what it is now YG Entertainment
And, in 1997
Park Jinyoung formed what it is now JYP Entertainment
you guys know these as "The Big Three".
What are idol bands exactly?
idol bands are the music groups formed by
young girls or young boys or girls and boys
who followed the footsteps of
Seo Taiji & Boys
in 1996
H.O.T
was one of the first groups that debuted
after that, they were followed by S.E.S
DIVA
Shinhwa
g.o.d
and, others to come
that's when all the Korean music
actually made the boom.
And, in 2001
all the groups started to make their way
towards the western part
out of Korea
they started to appear on Billboards
and they started to grow in social media
because also social media started to
like, started growing a lot
with twitter and facebook and all of this
and that helped them reach a much larger audience.
Around that time, artists
like Rain and BoA
started making an appearance in the japanese market.
And groups or other artists too that had
debuted around the 90's
started to have a decline in that moment
they started disbanding
or they just went into a period of inactivity.
After that, the second generation of K-Pop groups started to appear
groups like Super Junior
BIGBANG
Wonder Girls
Girls' Generation
and KARA.
In 2011
the three major companies, which are
they made an alliance called "The United Asian Managment"
which made them
have easier collaborations between each other
they made a casting system
and an exchange system
which made all these
exchanges between idols
or the members or the trainees in that momen easier
and it also helped them create a talent database
In 2012 the popularity was reached internationally
it started with La Musique de Corée in Paris
a popular show, also known as Music Bank
was the main stage of the concert
that sold 10,000 tickets in a few minutes.
In that same year
what was once the most viewed video on YouTube
Gangnam Style by PSY came out
and a lot of people went more into what was K-Pop
and, since then
a large part of the music market from
East Asia has been
succesfully dominated by what is K-Pop
So guys that was the basic history of what is K-Pop
a basic explanation
you know, touching details and stuff
if you wanna learn more you have to investigate
please don't just stick to wikipedia
cause, you know, sometimes can be altered and stuff
take some time to learn about it
or a little bit more about it
so we hope we helped you get an idea of
what it kind of is
a little bit
or made you, at least curious to find out a little bit more.
So, this was the first video of our new series
please, keep an eye on that
we'll keep working on...
let you guys know how
more about K-Pop
also please check our reactions for other videos
and we'll see you guys in the next video.
Bye~
