Convocation was pretty surreal. We've been all hearing about it since we applied and to actually be a part of it
made it feel like college was happening and it was really exciting.
It was single-handedly one of the most exciting and
strange things I think I've ever experienced. It is really kind of fantastic to
be surrounded by, like, really intelligent,
motivated women, and today was sort of, like, the first day
so I am really, really excited. I feel really good.
It felt cool it to be unified as a whole school.
Convocation was really interesting. I was surprised about the amount of school
spirit
that the school has. Obviously really colorful, with all the different colors of the
classes, but it was a really nice, sweet mix of things,
from, like, the singing, to the different speeches. I really loved the president's
speech. It was very inspiring.
This year at the College, we are rolling out a new charge,
never fear / change.
The phrase means be bold,
self-aware, future focused, optimistic, and fierce.
We want you to look at the changing world with confidence. Confidence
not only to face change but to lead it.
And sometimes you'll have to go where nobody else will go and you'll have to do things that no one else
will do. But if you believe in yourself,
that you can do it, all it takes you is believing in yourself. Alright.
As a firstie, the idea of never fear / change brings the whole new idea that we are
entirely in a new experience and have the opportunity to be and create whoever we want to be and do whatever we want to do.
I feel like I really connect with it.
It just teaches me that change is definitely something that you can't avoid and that it is
something really important in our lives, and that
you can't let fear get to you. And once you have that fear, you have to learn how to
adapt from it.
You may come into contact with something
that you aren't used to and instead of running away from it, you face it head on.
I think change is the only constant in our lives.
When I ran for SGA president last spring, I made it a point to campaign on the same ideals
that Mary Lyon founded our College upon, and that is the strong and fervent conviction
that women can and should make a difference in the world.
And never fear / change, I think, really encompasses the transformative
time that Mount Holyoke represents in the lives of so many different women,
from so many different stages of their lives. And I think that
you come here and you don't have a choice but to change, but to experience,
in a very positive way,
the power of women's education. And so I think that this really resonates with
me
because you're not gonna escape it. You must embrace it. And I think it's one of the
best things that Mount Holyoke has to offer.
