My friends, we stand here united in support of something
that cannot wait any longer.
We stand here today to say that we want something that
not only saves our budget but saves our lives.
We're here for something that shouldn't be considered a
privilege but should be right on the greatest country
on the face of the earth, and that's quality affordable
health care for each and every American.
We're here today because we can no longer wait for a
health care system that every individual, business, family
in this country can afford.
There are over 40 million people without health care.
40 million people across this country of ours who cannot
go to a doctor if they're sick.
It's not right in a democratic society, and we're not
going to stand for it anymore, are we?
We have a historic opportunity right now.
We are at the precipice of actually making a decision
to reform our health care system.
We must reform health care in this country as part of
our economic recovery.
My hope is that now this country can finally provide quality,
affordable health care that every single one of us can count on
no matter what.
Reform is about keeping what works and fixing what's broken.
Doctors and patients agree, we need health care reform,
we need it now, and we can't wait.
It's time to stop playing politics with health care reform and
turn the page on the past.
Together we can fix this crisis.
Let's let doctors practice the kind of medicine we envisioned
when we went to medical school, medicine that is focused on you.
We cannot do this alone, we need to do it together.
And you being here, and you fighting for us will make sure
that you hold everybody in that building's feet to the fire.
You are the people in this country, you elected me to the Senate in 2006,
you elected Barack Obama president 2008.
And in 2009, you're going to go across the street and
you're going to convince, and you're going to persuade,
and you're going to cajole, and you're going to do whatever it takes
to enact real health care reform for 300 million Americans.
We need to make sure that the history of America in the 21st
century does what no president has ever done.
We need to work together to pass universal health care
that gives you what you need when you need it.
It is about time the greatest country in the world had the
greatest health care system in the world.
We can do better, we must do better, and that means
comprehensive health care for each and every American.
