Im maurice roberts, the Budgerigar Society chairman.
Im chairman of the society of three and a half thouand members
all people who keep and adore budgerigars.
while the annual World Championships take place at the Dome, Doncaster
Its an annual show
and we get between something like eighteen hundred birds up to three or four thousand birds annually
its a tremendous exhibition
Its a great gathering and a fellowship
people actually make a pilgrimage here there's a lot of overseas people
they come annually and its a great gathering
and with budgerigars we spread a little bit of world peace
different cultures different colours
everybody's got the same interest and it breaks down barriers
The great Alf Ormrod from preston originally
kept birds all his life
and had a green fingered effect with birds
he had an ability to breed very good birds
He won the show in 1975 & 76 with
a dark green ***
The budgerigar Society has been going since 1925
it was originally the budgerigar club
We asked the King to get involved, he said if we call it "society he would be a paitron
so it then turned to the budgerigar society
It has been going several years and these are some of the the greats of the society
there's been many more and lots of people before these people
but these are the people from the 1960s onwards that
were great influence on the society
To become a champion breeder in this hobby
and to have a chance at winning at this show, it is all about dedication
With all livestock breeding you have to be dedicated
you only get out of the birds what you put in
It is very time consuming
If you want to get to that level
it's all about preparation, some people spend hours and hours and hours
preparing one bird for the show
why? becaue they feel like its their pride and joy
and they want to give the bird the best chance possible at the show
Other people dont do that amount of preparation
and unfortunately they always end up the bridesmaids within the
the classes instead of the bride!
Ive been a member of the budgerigar society since 1982
and for the past 12 years ive been show manager at this great event
I took over from the late great peter sanderson
who previous to me had been show manager for the world show for twenty years
So it is a hobby and a situation that once it gets into your blood you carry on
Its about everybody having a good time
enjoying what you are doing and seeing the way forward with
new breeds or better birds as we go forward
Im Roy Aplin, I come from Dorset
the lower part of England. Im the BS president
for a year from 2013-2014
Im 6 months through my presidency
and Im finding it very interesting
This is the any age section
this bird is the best of the any age dark greens
unfortunately it's short of a few flights in one wing
in the class before it was in a class of 7
and the first three had flight problems
and they were the better birds
so ive gone for this bird that would normally be peanalised
because of the flights but because there's
not a number of dark green here, this one has taken the award
This one was placed second
It hasnt quite got the head quality that we are looking for
As you can see with the first placed bird, you cant miss it because it's
quite an eye-catcher but the second one is very smart but not quite enough there
slightly finer feather
then the third bird
If i can get it on the perch
just lacking the qualities of the first placed winner
Hi my name is Chris Snell
I'm the judge of the light greens
I have been breeding budgerigars for 48 years
This is the
line up for the young bird in the light greens
this is the fourth bird which is an intermediate bird
an excellent quality bird. Before I start id like to say these 4 birds
are all very good and although this bird is 4th in the line up
It is a super bird, lovely face
Nice length, could do with a little bit more substance
Thats why its placed 4th. The bird thats 3rd..
again, an excellent bird, a really good bird
Its got size, its got depth of face and mask
It could do with a little bit more feather on the head
a few pin feather but again a really excellent bird
Now I put the next two together, the the second best which is the best
*** bird
and the hen. This *** bird is outstanding
why have i put it second ?
It has a twisted tail and it has one spot missing
If it didn't have a twisted tail
and It had an extra spot in, it would have won.
Lovely face and a really outstanding bird
The bird that won is a hen, a champion hen in excellent condition
It is a beautiful hen
I think in budgerigars the hen should look like human women
And the budgerigar *** should look like us men
thats a beautiful hen, very attractive, gorgeous face
very good condition, top class hen
We are going to invite our President to come forward
We welcome Roy Aplin
And the winner of Best in Show
The partnership of R&M Miller
The winner of best young bird in show
another partnership, Don rowell and Linda Heighton
This is our second best in show at the budgerigar society world championship show
and its with a golden face grey ***
who just missed out on the same award last year
Its all thanks to my father here
who prepared the bird perfectly over the last few weeks. I cant even begin to describe what it feels like
to have won it twice
as many many top breeders
in this hobby go throught their careers in the hobby and dont achieve this
so its a tremendous honor and I am very very humbled
