What do you think of Danby vs GE chest freezers?
The only advantage both of them has is greater energy efficiency compared to upright freezers.
I was asking about a comparison between the two.
GE chest freezers are regularly sold with a freezer alarm, because it needs one. If
it does not have a freezer alarm, it needs one.
That's simply a precaution in case it fails.
GE freezers in general regularly fail. If the compressors don't go out, condensation
sometimes causes controls to fail or even electrical shorts.
That's a fire hazard.
GE chest freezers have managed to catch fire, though fortunately, rarely.
The only song of fire and ice I want to own is the George R. R. Martin book, not a burning
freezer with the wailing of a fire alarm.
The danger of a burning freezer is that we rarely have working fire detectors in the
garage to notify us of the fire until it has spread to the house.
So that is a major strike against GE chest freezers. What do you think of Danby?
Danby's freezers sell really well in part because they are so cheap.
Affordable is a big plus.
They are also rather energy efficient.
Saving on my electric bill is another plus.
The not so hot features include a tendency to leak Freon or whatever refrigerant they
use, usually within a year or two of installation.
I've heard the refrigerant can leak out during shipping.
Then this is a widespread problem by delivery people. However, a good test of that is whether
or not it can get really cold after it is delivered.
That's the point of a freezer -- to freeze things.
If the freezer does not go down to freezing after the first time you plug it in, regardless
of make or model, you need to get it replaced immediately.
And which model is worse for that?
Danby does not deliver on the promise of keeping its cool more often than GE.
