As a high performance athlete you’re on the edge so it is a
very fine line between doing enough volume of intensity in
training to get the adaptation that you need to perform at the highlevel, and doing too
much and entering a stage of what we call overreaching, so recovery techniques can be
really important in optimising that balance.
Where do you think Australia is currently ranked at that high
performance level in terms of recovery and why?
Dr Stuart Cormack: Yeah look I think I’m obviously quite biased
but Australia is probably one of the leading countries, I mean there
are some people here at the AIS who are really driving a lot of the high end research from
around the world and looking at the different protocols
for the different types of exercise so I’d say clearly leading the pack.
Interviewer: There is a lot of different work being done in the recovery
space, for you what’s one of the more exciting or innovative areas currently
being looked at in Australia.
Yeah look there is a lot being done but I think one of the really
interesting things is looking at the different types of fatigue,
tools to measure the different types of fatigue, and then specific recovery protocols for those
individual fatigue types.
The London Olympics are coming up, and there is a lot of focus,
obviously jet lag and those sorts of issues are big for Australian
athletes, we have to do more travelling than most of our competitors, is this an area that
we can get a real advantage on if we put a lot of effort and focus on that
area.
I think possibly and we are probably a little more use to it than a lot of countries so
for us it may be something that we don’t get as negative mindset about
and sometimes necessity can be the mother of driving some really good protocols.
And for yourself Stuart, having a symposium like this, the benefits to
Australian sport?
Look it’s fantastic, the opportunity to hear from people who are
experts in particular fields and then of course just the opportunities
for the informal discussions at lunch and coffee breaks to talk about applying the research
to practise it’s just fantastic.
