[Introduction Music]
CARLOS: Man, what a game!
JUAN: Yeah, did you see that pitcher's face
when I slammed that homer?
CARLOS: I sure did.
My Dad had that same look the other day.
JUAN: Oh yeah?
What happened?
CARLOS: Well, it all started on Saturday.
Mom fixed lunch before leaving
for my baseball practice.....
MARIA: Carlos, do you want some more chicken before we leave?
CARLOS: Mmm...maybe
MARIA: Ok, then, I'll leave it out.
I'm going to grab my purse and we are leaving.
Ok, Carlos, grab your stuff and let's go,
it's almost one o'clock.
Ah, this boy!
[Light music]
EDUARDO: Mmm, I'm starvin'.
This chicken sandwich looks great.
TV: Everything counts when it comes to protecting
your family. The same way...
... and welcome to today's broadcast of the Texas Rangers,
versus the Baltimore Orioles,
live from Camden Yards, It's five o'clock on this
beautiful afternoon in Baltimore
with the temperature a very nice sixty eight degrees.
This is the second game of this series,
with the Rangers taking the opener
last night in extra innings...
Wow!
That's about as beautiful a bunt as you'll ever see Pepe.
Reynolds just laid that one down perfectly
and beat the throw to first.
Well, we'll see what the Rangers can do
with the bases loaded here in the bottom of....
[Eduardo is heard vomiting]
DR. GONZALES: So Mr. Fernandez, you said you were throwing up
all night and can't keep anything down?
EDUARDO: Yeah, I was up and down all night with cramps and nausea.
If I wasn't vomiting, I had diarrhea.
I haven't being able to eat anything
but crackers and I threw them up.
DR. GONZALES Ok, when did you start feeling this way?
EDUARDO: Well, I came home
yesterday afternoon at about 5:30pm.
Maria had taken Carlos to the baseball practice.
I was hungry so I grabbed a chicken sandwich
that was sitting on the kitchen counter.
After I finished eating it ... I started feeling this way...
DR. GONZALES: Mr. Fernandez, I think
you probably got sick from eating the chicken sandwich.
EDUARDO: Really?
The sandwich looked and smelled good.
DR. GONZALES: Well, you can't tell if food is safe
to eat just by looking at it, because you can't see,
smell, or taste harmful bacteria.
Bacteria can grow very fast on food left out of
the refrigerator for more than two hours,
especially in warmer weather.
MARIA: Maybe it's my fault!
I forgot to put the chicken and the chicken sandwich
in the refrigerator before we left the house.
I was rushing to take our son to the baseball practice.
DR. GONZALES: Don't worry Mrs. Fernandez,
your husband is a healthy man and should feel better
within a couple of days.
Next time though, remember to refrigerate the chicken
and chicken sandwiches within two hours after cooking,
or one hour at temperatures of 90 degrees F
or above. This can reduce risk of
foodborne illness or food poisoning.
EDUARDO: Foodborne illness, is that what I got?
DR. GONZALES: Yes, Mr. Fernandez.
Foodborne illness often presents itself
as flu-like symptoms such as nausea, vomiting,
diarrhea, or fever, so many people may not recognize
the illness is caused by bacteria
or other pathogens in food.
Most of these cases can be prevented.
Here, take this pamphlet with you.
It presents four simple steps you can take to
protect your family: Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill.
Be sure to call me if you have any problems.
EDUARDO AND MARIA: Thank you Dr. Gonzales.
DR. GONZALES: You are welcome.
[Light music]
JUAN: Wow!
That's some story!
How's your dad feeling now?
CARLOS: Dad felt better in just a couple of days,
but the doctor explained that some people could get sicker
than others and could even end up in the hospital!
Kids younger than 10 years-old, just like us,
people like Aunt Linda who is going to have a baby,
and older folks like our grandparents,
should be extra careful to avoid getting sick
from bacteria in food.
Dr. Gonzales also gave us some neat information
on how to keep food safe.
Check it out!
JUAN: Very cool! Can I look at it?
CARLOS: Sure.
C'mon, I promised mom I'll help her with dinner.
CARLOS: Hi mom, Juan is here with me.
I told him how dad got sick last week.
Can we help get dinner ready?
MARIA: Sure kids, but first you both need
to wash your hands.
CARLOS: Oh yes, we have to wash our hands for 20 seconds
with warm water and soap, this is the same
as singing the Happy Birthday song twice.
[Children singing "Happy Birthday"]
CARLOS: Mom, this isn't the cutting board you used
to cut the raw chicken, is it mom?
MARIA: No Carlos, I'm using a clean one to cut
the ingredients for the salad. See?
CARLOS: You did wash your hands
after cutting that raw chicken, right mom?
MARIA: Of course Carlos.
You learned about food safety really fast.
CARLOS: Dad, is it time to check the temperature of the chicken?
EDUARDO: Yes Carlos, let me get the food thermometer,
so we can make sure the chicken has reached 165 ºF.
JUAN: Here it is!
EDUARDO: Thank you.
Yes, it's ready!
MARIA: Kids, can you both take
the tortillas, rice, and lemon to the table?
CARLOS: Of course mom.
JUAN: Sure thing Mrs. Fernandez.
MARIA: Thank you.
CARLOS: Oh!
And we have to remember to refrigerate any leftovers
within 2 hours or throw them out,
because nasty bacteria can grow in it, right dad?
EDUARDO: Right, Carlos.
JUAN: Wow!
I learned so much today.
I can't wait to go back home and tell MY family
about the four food safety steps:
Clean, separate, cook, and chill.
Because I sure don't want to get sick!
[Parents laughing]
[Closing music]
