I did my service trip in Atlanta, Georgia at the City of Refuge.
They are a non-profit and they also have a women's and children's shelter
So we went to an animal shelter in South Carolina - SC CARES
They work with -- it's a no-breed, no-kill animal shelter that works with exotic animals.
It was fantastic, we did a lot of animal work. We met all 187 animals. (Yes)
And we did a lot of outside work raking, picking up waste matter,
cleaning the animals, brushing them down. We went into the wolves' den
and maintained it for them. We helped create meals in the kitchen and
prepare them and serve them. We helped clean up. We helped
the kids in the children's school area. We also helped re-arrange and prepare rooms
for incoming women and children who were going to stay in the shelter
One of the things that interested Sam and I going down there was the fact that
we were so passionate about what her mission was -- Cindy Hendricks, she's
the founder of CARES -- And just her passion about
the place. She made us want to be there, (Oh yeah!) from the very beginning.
and we wanted to give back to what she gave back to these animals.
I didn't have any real "umph," something special to make me lead one
But I really did feel like I could do it. I've seen it been done.
I've had great examples because both my trips were great. So I went to see
what type of leader I could be.And see how great I could make my trip, because
I had some big shoes to fill because my trips were all great.
Being a coordinator has really prepared me for life outside of college.
When you're in school you're learning the textbook things, but this -- being a coordinator
you learn the actual how to
interact with people that you might not, you wouldn't work well with.
Just -- we're all people. We're all people. We just have different starting points.
One of our participants, she actually said, "It helped me discover who
I am -- it helped me be me." I found out who I was and who I wanted to be.
I got so much more than I
was ever expecting to get into it.
