All dogs should have a good fitting collar. Not only are collars indispensable for maintain
control when walking and exercising dogs but they are also very useful for establishing
identification and ownership should your pet become lost.
When sizing your pet for a collar, use a tape measure to find the circumference of your
pet's neck. If you are purchasing a quick clip style collar
use this measurement. If you are purchasing a buckle style add two
inches to the measurement. If your pet's collar measurement is between
two available sizes, it's best to order the larger size.
When fitting the collar it should rest high on your pet's neck, and not too loose.
Adjust the collars fit so that you can easily place two fingers under the collar.
This allows you to grab the collar easily should you need to.
Recheck the collar fit occasionally, and adjust for growth, especially in growing puppies.
Some owners prefer a harness for their pet, especially in pets suffering tracheal or respiratory
problems that prevent the use of a standard collar.
Harnesses fit differently than a collar. When your pet pulls forward during walks - pressure
is distributed through the chest and shoulders - not on the neck.
To size your dog for a harness, measure the girth around your dog's chest - just behind
the front legs. Generally, this is the size you should purchase.
However, measuring instructions can vary by manufacturer so please refer to the specific
product information. When adjusting, check to make sure you can
slide two fingers under the harness so that the fit is not too snug.
