This is Charlie, my little car, that I had in Australia for almost a year.
And these are Mater and McQueen, two cars from Disney Pixar's new movie Cars 2
This is me and Charlie, somewhere in the Outback
or in Tasmania
or in Melbourne by night.
Charlie got his name, because as a young car, he had some problems with his air condition.
and he couldn't be cooled anymore.
That's why I called him after CharlieIsSoCoolLike, who's a YouTuber from the UK
who thinks, he is only 'cool-like'.
And if you didn't get the bad pun, you didn't get the bad pun. ;-)
My car Charlie was my mate in every situation
We ate together, slept together and even suffered together
but still we probably both had the best times of our lives.
Charlie was a car with character.
Lightning McQueen is also a car with car-acter.
He thinks, he the fastest racing car in the world, so he goes on a trip around the globe
with his best friend Mater, to see Japan
and Europe.
But while McQueen is racing, Mater gets into a James Bond-like secret agents adventure
where everybody thinks, that he's a super-spy
with trouble only waiting to happen.
For most people, cars are just an aid to get to work or shopping
But if you spend a lot of time in your car, you realize, that they can come to life.
When I was ridin... uhm, driving through the solitude of Australias outback,
I felt like a cowboy on his loyal horse.
We were 'Lucky Manniac and Charlie Jumper, a long long way from home'
In this year, I have learned more about cars and experienced more on the street, than ever before in my life.
I thought, when someone is making a movie only about cars, what was their inspiration?
What were THEIR personal Charlie stories?
When Disney Pixar showed their first clips of Cars 2 to a bunch of YouTubers, me and Batz were there too.
The first thing, I wanted to know, when I arrived in the great hall, was:
If you could be a car in the world of Cars, which one would it be?
From the Cars-cars?
I would be...
Let me think.. That's a good question.
I don't know...
A Mercedes C-Class Coupé, which will come out soon.
Hey! Why is he me asking back!??
But, IF I was a car, it would be a Ford Falcon Station Wagon, like my car Charlie.
The interesting thing about Vlogger's day at Pixar, where only Vloggers and Bloggers were invited
is that we could really talk to the people that were creating the movie.
In the Pixar Archives, we could marvel at macquettes made from clay
that were used to build, rig and texturize the car-acters in the computer.
There were also some Germans involved, like these two.
Can you explain to me, what you do and what rigging is?
We model the characters and work closely with the art department, which designs them.
With wireframes, textures and everything? - Everything.
We then use deformers that can be utilized by the animators to animate the characters.
For instance, we use deformers to rotate things like arms, or to make surfaces look nicer.
Are these digital muscles, that you hear of in Making Ofs, where you automate movements
so the animator doesn't have to bend every muscle, when moving the arm? - Yes, that's what we do.
How do you get to Pixar as a German?
I have studied at Filmakademie Ludwigsburg and one of my class mates was here a year before me
He recommended me and showed my demo reel to the recruiter.
If one really wants it, even a German can start at Pixar.
Rules for Pixar cars provide that you can convert any real life car into a Cars world car.
Eyes are always in the windshield
and there are even more differences
When you look at the windshield, you see, that it is much steeper
You can look at it much more from the front,
That's because with less steep windshields the cars would always look up
These cars are supposed to look straight ahead
"The Pixar Nose"
Usually eye-lids are not bend that way
but for pixar cars the sharp bend indicates that here would be a nose.
Cars don't really have noses, but this one has.
The tyers are also a bit larger than in real life.
This is real metal!
The highlight of our visit was watching 25 minutes of footage,
months before releasing it to the cinemas, in Pixar's well-guarded in-house cinema.
Of course, cameras weren't allowed here
but instead, I was able to talk to John Lasseter
the boss of Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar!
He was the director of the first Cars
and travelled for months through the US with his family
and also went on a research trip around the world for the movies.
If anyone knows something about cars and travelling, it's him.
And he also had a Charlie - with a different name...
You can feel that people here at Pixar really love cars
And I'm glad that I'm not the only one who is that nuts to give his car a name.
I liked Cars 2 much better than Cars, which was set in a small town at Route 66.
The second part tells a completely different story
and that starts at the beginning, which is at night, on the open sea.
A place where you wouldn't really expect any cars.
They say, out here is where the ocean burns
We're here. Right where you paid me to bring you.
Question is:
Why?
I'm looking for a car.
For a Pixar film, this one has some quite tough scenes,
with explosions and real threats, which in my opinion is a good move, story-wise.
The secret agent gadgets fit perfectly into the world of cars
and the designers probably had a lot of fun creating it
Even the Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower were car'ed
And the big show down in London excites with detailled shots of the British capital.
Where are we? - In Big Bentley!
After talking so much about cars, I really want to go back,
riding with Charlie through the Australian Outback!
If I only hadn't released him back into the wild...
I'm so sorry, but cars like you wouldn't be accepted in Germany...
Your steering wheel is on the wrong side and so are the indicator lights and windshield wipers..
and your motor is way too big!
Oh Charlie...
But, who knows... maybe some day I will come back,
buy Charlie 2 and start again!
Cars 2 starts on July 28
and when you sit in the cinema, wait for this sentence...
and this sound...
Batz and coldmirror both provided a tiny bit of their talents for the German voice cast.
That and a few more sentences
If that isn't YOUR sound!
This is MY sound!
Have a lots of fun with the movie!
And what I would like to know from you:
What car would YOU be in the world of cars?
