Erik: Why do you feel international travel is a must have when trying to understand influencer
culture?
Phil: If you want to understand global influencer culture, itÕs Ð again it kind of comes back
to that theory of you want to connect the dots and theyÕre all on straight lines, you
know, if youÕre gonna understand influencer culture you have to see whatÕs going on in
these other places, you know you can read about New York City you can watch movies about
New York City but if youÕre not in the moment of New York your really going to understand
it and you know thereÕs a thousand different perceptions of what New York is, from kind
of the Sex and the City concept and those sort of things where people see this highly
stylized glamorous New York to the Law-and-Order New York where everything is a crime scene
of the week sort of theory. But thereÕs a real New York that we all experience as people
who live in it and interact with it in different ways and I think to get that same perspective
from an international audience you have to go and spend some time in their environment,
listen to their music, eat their food, go to the places they go to, itÕs very different
from trying to pick up the pages of a magazine and read through something. You can try to
transfer some of that experience through more interactive ways but for someone like myself
itÕs important for me to actually, you know, see them feel them, touch them kind of thing.
