I haven't been feeling 100% lately, so I decided to do a detox.
I Googled "detox diet" and one of the first ones that came up
was a Dr. Oz detox. I took a look at it and it looked
fairly nutritious compared to those crazy, like,
3-day juice fasts or whatever. So
I decided to go with that one. And what it is is ...
it's 48 hours only, and for breakfast you eat quinoa.
For lunch you have a banana smoothie,
and for dinner, it's a vegetable broth,
which I guess is still fairly liquid.
But you can snack on green beans, celery sticks
and cucumbers as much as you want and then there are 2 different
juice recipes that he gives that you can drink
like unlimited amounts of. So that sounded
pretty good to me, and I just got back from grocery shopping for it.
I wasn't able to pick up all of the ingredients. I wasn't able to track down pomegranate juice
and
rice and almond milk. So I have to go
to probably a health food store to get some those things.
But once I get all the ingredients together,
I will show you guys.
So here's some -- not all -- of the ingredients that I got. I got some prunes
for my quinoa. I already toasted it 'cause I heard
that if you toast the quinoa it won't be
as bitter when you eat it. Anyway, the prunes are gonna go with the quinoa --
on top, I think, to add some sweetness
and some flavor. And nutrition,
of course. Some ginger ... Pom. It's not focusing ...
I didn't realize that Pom pomegranate juice
wasn't 100% pomegranate juice.
It's only
51% -- this particular one, the red one --
which I thought was pomegranate juice. Why is it not focusing?
Anyway, I didn't realize that the red one
was not 100% pomegranate juice. It's only 51% pomegranate juice
and 49% cherry juice.
So that may be kinda weird. Anyway, I'm gonna mix that with this
pineapple juice and ... I forget what the other ingredient ...
lemon. Lemon juice
and water, I think that's it. Anyway. I got some rice milk.
And I also have to get some almond milk, too.
So it's not a cheap, not an inexpensive
endeavor. Okay, so here are my notes. Pineapple juice, lemon,
Pom juice and water is the snack juice.
And this is the quinoa -- breakfast quinoa with chopped
prunes.
I'm gonna pre-cook the quinoa base and then
mix in the milk and the prunes in the morning.
I'm gonna pre-make this veggie broth because it takes a couple of
hours. Yeah, like an hour or two.
And it's got a load of ingredients.
So I'm gonna get started on that today. It's Friday.
So I'm gonna cook that now so I won't have to worry about it tomorrow.
Okay, this is the vegetable broth boiling.
I've just lowered the temperature and I'm gonna cover it. It has
shiitake mushroom caps, red onions, fennel,
parsley, celery ... what else?
A lot of
seasonings like oregano, pepper ...
Okay, so Dr. Oz said one lemon ... I'm not really sure
what he means by that. I put in the juice of one lemon and
some of its seeds in there. [Laughs] Now I'm going
to pour -- this is 3/4 cup pineapple juice,
so I'm gonna add that to it.
I've got one cup of pomegranate juice that's going in. Or pomegranate
cherry, which if I had known ...
Last, but not least, we need to
add 3 cups of water. Alright, so this is the final result
of the "snack juice." Which is
3/4 cup of pineapple juice, 3 cups of water, 1 cup of pomegranate juice,
and the juice of one lemon. And I've gotta tell you ... I just kinda tasted it ...
It's kind of ... well, definitely tart. And kinda, like,
bitterish, so ... it'll be interesting. So here's
the juice. It's really dark and kind of purple. It tastes good ...
Ok, so I finally sat down with my quinoa
and look at the size of that thing! This is ginormous!
I mean, look. This is just breakfast and I know the rest of the day
doesn't really include any solids.
I don't think that I can finish all of this for breakfast, so I'll probably just be snacking
on this
throughout the rest of the day. It's crazy, but ...
you got the chopped-up prunes and the quinoa,
some grated ginger in there, and nutmeg. It's not focusing.
I just poured some flaxseed oil into it, which I heard tastes pretty nasty so hopefully
it won't be too toxic. It did smell kinda yucky when I put it in.
I've got my pomegranate-pineapple-lemon juice over there, and some water.
I'm gonna dig in now. It's actually not half bad.
It tastes pretty good! It's not bitter.
It's nutty, of course, with the quinoa. I don't taste the ginger.
I don't really taste the nutmeg. It's sweet from the prunes.
Yeah, I like it. Oh, there's also rice milk in here,
which I think was just to, sort of, give it some moisture.
But I like it! I don't think I'll be able to finish the whole thing in one sitting,
but it's good. Okay, lunch time.
Half cup of almond milk, one tablespoon ground flax seeds or
chia seeds ... um, 1/4 cup of
frozen blueberries, quarter banana and half a cup of ice,
which I'm gonna use water for instead because
I don't have ice and it's kinda cold. Okay, I have to say
the color of this thing is really pretty nice. It's a little
darker on camera but it's like a dusty purple.
Really interesting. Let's give it a go.
It's still a little chunky. I haven't broken up all the banana pieces yet, but ...
Um, I probably should've blended it
a little more. Doesn't taste great.
[Laughs]
The flaxseed
flavor is very potent in this one.
I taste a little bit banana, but mostly flaxseed.
And it's not that great of a flavor. And this is lunch. So.
Okay, so it's now 6:30 and
I finished all 3 meals for the day.
Lunch was definitely the worst.
I didn't feel like I was full afterwards, and it tasted
really horrible, so I snacked on some cucumbers
with some olive oil and salt and pepper. That was
really good, and then I had my veggie broth for dinner, which was okay.
It wasn't -- it smelled a lot better than it tasted.
But it was fairly filling, and then I had an apple
because you're allowed that and sauerkraut. But I don't like sauerkraut
so I didn't get it and I hope I don't get scurvy [laughs] but it's only 48 hours so ...
All-in-all, I'm feeling pretty good. I am
craving meat. But
I don't think that's because I can't eat it, I think it's because I saw some pictures
online of burgers and I started looking at
menus and I was being stupid. So anyway, Day One is pretty much done.
I will probably finish up the juice that I made this morning. I still have
like 1 1/2 to 2 cups left. And I
might snack on some more cucumbers, but other than that ...
Yeah, I feel okay. I don't feel great.
I don't feel lousy. I don't feel any different, really, from normal.
But maybe tomorrow I will. Okay, so I haven't
vlogged all day, I've actually been feeling
kind of exhausted. Probably because I haven't had any coffee, but
anyway, this is my dinner soup -- vegetable broth.
It's really not attractive, but it tastes
okay. It's got a lot of seasoning in it, so it helps
have some more flavor. It's got, like, oregano
and paprika ... ground pepper, caraway seeds -- which I didn't add because
I had fennel in it already.
But that is an ingredient in the recipe.
And just some sea salt.
So it tastes pretty good. It's actually pretty filling. And I
don't know what the serving size is supposed to be because
he doesn't say in his directions, but
the recipe makes 5 servings and
the detox diet is only 2 days, so
I'm gonna guess that you're supposed to -- or you're able to have as much as
2 1/2 servings each day? I don't know.
And to go with this, he says you can have an apple, so
I'll probably do that after I eat this. Day Two, my energy has been
pretty low all day. I don't know if it's because I haven't been having my coffee, but
I mean, I'm sure that has something to do with it. I woke up and I felt my body was really sore.
And I don't know why because I didn't do
any exercise yesterday and I slept like 7 hours.
So I don't really know why my body was so sore. And I wasn't hungry at all.
I eventually made myself eat the
quinoa. It took about 5 hours to finish. And I didn't have my lunch
until about 3 or 4 pm. It tasted a lot better today. It was the blueberry-banana-
flaxseed smoothie. I put half as much
flaxseed as I did yesterday because I think I put twice
the amount that you're supposed to put in yesterday
and it tasted SO much better. It wasn't quite tasty,
but I didn't hate it at all. And I just finished my dinner ...
I've been taking naps like all day
because I'm so exhausted. I don't know. And I feel okay now, so
hopefully my energy levels will
be at this level for the rest of the night and I'll be able to get something done.
I had 2 bowls of veggie broth tonight
instead of just one, alongside my apple and I wasn't hungry. I felt pretty satisfied.
And I wasn't really craving anything. I think
Dr. Oz could've done a better job explaining
why the ingredients that he put into the recipes were
there, because I omitted some of the more minor things, or the things
I thought were more minor. And it would've been nice
if he had explained, like, why we needed caraway seeds.
Overall, it was okay? I don't feel ...
I liked that I wasn't really that hungry at any given point.
I didn't feel malnourished or anything. And I definitely did not feel weak at any given point. I feel tired ...
but I think that was more of a symptom, like a caffeine withdrawal thing. But anyway,
I hope this vlog was entertaining for you and hopefully helpful, if you were
considering doing the Dr. Oz detox diet. And most importantly,
I wanted to ask if any of you guys have done the Dr. Oz
detox diet, whether it'd helped you or not.
Or whether you felt any difference, because just, you know. It kinda sucks, like, I don't feel anything and
I spent like a good amount of money on good food, and I like ...
tortured myself for 2 days. For what appears to be no reason.
So anyway, let me know if you've done this and whether it helped or you didn't
feel any different. And that's about it ...
Thanks for watching, and good night, guys!
