My name is Moyra Davey,
and I'm an artist.
I make photographs and videos,
and I also write.
So, these are two pieces.
They're mail art, essentially.
They're photographs that have been
folded up and addressed and stamped
and taped and then mailed to specific
individuals in the case of each piece,
and then I collect them back
from the addressees,
and I assemble them in these grids.
This piece, the title is "Mary Marie."
The images are words from a book
that Wollstonecraft, Mary Wollstonecraft
published in 1796.
The book is called
"Letters Written During a Short Residency
in Sweden, Norway and Denmark."
Essentially, they were very beautiful
letters that she wrote to her lover
Gilbert Imlay, describing
what she was seeing on this trip.
Also, she was pining for him,
and that comes across.
This piece, the title is
"We Are Young and We Are Friends of Time,"
and it's comprised of details
of Mary Shelley's diaries.
The ones where you can see words
like "walk," "write," "read,"
that's the published version
of Shelley's diary from when she was
quite young, a teenager.
And then the two images just to the right,
the snooker table and the two
pinball tables, those are photographs
that I took around 1982,
when I was around the same age
as these women when they were writing
these diaries and letters.
They go pretty fast
through the postal system.
That ends up registering for sure
in the image, I think, when people see them,
that, you know, they can imagine
this thing traveling
through time and space.
