Part 2 – final Under glass decoupage
Applying gold leaf to the back of the plate.
For the application of gold leaf
We use mordant varnish. this time, brushing.
It doesn’t have to be a very thick coat.
Brush and spread well the mordant varnish.
Then wait for the mordancy of the varnish.
When does it occur?
When we touch the plate with the finger node
and the varnish is gummy.
That’s the right moment to apply gold leaf.
This takes a while and the time of this process
may vary due to the humidity of air.
Applying golden leaf:
Take it as stretched as you can.
Release.
Pass a round and hairy brush, in circles.
This helps to accommodate the gold leaf
From this point, we do amendments
Take smaler pieces and brush them over.
Use a soft glove. If you do not have it
Use baby powder on your hands
Thus the leave not sticks in you hand.
The work is this: Making amendments
and dust, until the entire application is done.
Here, for instance, take the excess of gold
and apply where needed.
The amendments do not appear
once the work is all done.
Get the most you can from the leaf.
Do not apply the leaf wrinkled!
This will make your work looks opaque!
Once finished, put the plate against the light
And check to see if there are no holes
in any part of the plate.
After 15 to 20 minutes of drying
do the final cleaning.
This is a brush of blush. The larger the better!
Spin the brush across the plate.
Dusting and taking all the excess off.
Then put on the glove again,
and smooth the whole dish. If you don’t have a glove
use a soft cloth, linen free.
Make a slight pressure. Don’t rub it hard!
Wipe the edges.
Let’s see the result...
Oh! Isn’t it beautifull?
But we’re not finished, yet.
Let’s go to the next phase.
Let’s examine:
This edge has no life, no texture.
It’s not collaborating with the design as a whole.
What to do?
Take a steel sponge and sand the edge
Do it applying a moderate pressure.
This will make the gold leaf more transparent.
Sand the shaded areas to highlight them more
Paint the Back of the plate, after this.
I teared deeper some parts of the edges.
Then I painted all the back with brown acrylic paint.
Let’s do the circular crackling.
I’ll paint a beige over the brown color.
It’s not necessary to cover well the brown paint.
This color will appear under de crackling
Now, apply the crackling varnish in circles.
The varnish always cracks In the same direction
it is applied. This is a very good tip!
Wait 20 minutes before go to next phase.
Paint the brown acrylic paint over the crackling varnish.
Do it very slightly and in circles, too.
Short strokes, with little paint in the tip of brush.
Be careful not move the varnish, beneath.
Don’t do it all at once! Take your time.
Slow is better.
Let it dry well and apply 3 layers of colorless shellac.
And it’s done!!
I hope you’ve enjoyed!!
See you next time!!
