THIS UNASSUMING LITTLE BEETLE MAY LOOK FAMILIAR
BUT THERE'S SOMETHING VERY DIFFERENT ABOUT IT.
I've got a way cool click beetle here
that is glowing in these 2 little spots.
IT GLOWS IN THE DARK.
The purpose of the light is much like a lightning bug
which is another group of beetles
that use the light to attract mates
so it's involved in courtship or defense.
THERE ARE OVER 7000 SPECIES OF BEETLES IN TEXAS
WITH 3 GROUPS OF BEETLES THAT ILLUMINATE,
GLOW WORMS, FIREFLYS AND GLOWING CLICK BEETLES.
AND ALTHOUGH THE GLOWING CLICK BEETLE IS NATIVE TO TEXAS,
THEY'RE NOT VERY COMMON.
AND THOUGH SOME BEETLES CAN BE PESTS TO CROPS,
THE GLOWING CLICK BEETLE IS PRETTY HARMLESS AND PRETTY COOL.
Even entomology students at A&M
get freaked out and gather round to ooh and aah.
FOR TEXAS PARKS AND WILDLIFE, THIS IS LYDIA SALDANA.
