O-Week is where it all begins
at UWA. It kicks off at the official Commencement Ceremony, this is where the
Vice Chancellor and Guild President welcome you to UWA.
O-Week is a bit different for everyone depending on what type of student you are
and what you're studying. On the UniStart website you can select your major
and see a full program of everything that's happening in O-Week for you. The best thing is to
try and attend as many activities as you can
some are informative and tell you about your course and some are just a great way
of meeting new people
If you are new to Perth, it's a great opportunity to make some friends and get
involved.
A major part of the week is your academic orientation,
where you meet people from your faculty and find out what's ahead in your course,
get to meet some of the key staff and representatives from your guild faculty
societies
they link you up not only people within your course but also your UniMentor
which is an experienced person within your course. The student life sessions at O-Week
cover all the other things you need to know.
You will have to do some online units within your first year that
do sort of open your eyes. These are the units that really help you develop your academic skills.
You will discover LMS an online learning environment for UWA
students as well as CMO
course materials online, which lists all of the resources required for your units
and links you to the university libraries and to OneSearch an online library catalog.
You can also check out a hand book website that will give you more information
about your course, your unit and especially your unit outlines.
The UniStart Team can help you get started. They can tell you how to access
timetables
and get your textbook lists through StudentConnect. Text books are available from the
co-op bookshop
the second hand bookshop in the Guild Village, the online textbook exchange
or you can borrow them for one of the libraries. Check out the UWA
transport and parking guide. There's lots of different ways of getting into UWA
I highly recommend public transport, the buses stop right here!
They provide so much on campus, whether it's gym or food
that once you get here, pretty much everything is on campus. There is security on
campus
24/7 and they can provide escort to car parks
colleges and bus stops as well as adjacent accommodation.
There's also important services like the University Medical Center,
counseling services along with off-campus and after hours crisis care.
The guild is a student organization they are big part of life at UWA
and have lots of clubs, services and support. O-Day is packed with activities to get you
connected to your Guild.
There is also UWA Sport and Recreation whether you want to play a team sport or an
individual sport or even just
you are looking at gym access, they cover just about everything. Student Services can
help you with everything from housing information
to career information, they also have a lot useful transitional programs like UniStart
UniMentor and UniSkills.
The team from STUDYSmarter can help prepare you for your studies.
They offer free workshop and help you with your research and communication skills.
You should of received a getting started guide at a
pre-enrolment session. In your O-Week USB given to you on orientation day
but you can also find it online. If you do get stuck call the
UniStart first year advisor on 6488 3988.
The first week is always, I guess, a difficult part of settling in.
Just follow the steps check out the guides and ask for help if you need it.
Good luck enjoy your life at UWA!
