Mediation, ADR, at he time was starting to grow in the legal field in particular, and
also the human resources field, and we felt that there was a need for a mediation program
somewhere at Durham College.
We go in there, and not only do we solve the problem, we also are able to help repair or,
you know, maintain those relationships as well.
Just being in class has made me feel like it's a good fit because ist's kind of a mixture
of criminal justice and mediation.
Within the mediation/ADR program we have Campus Conflict Resolution Services.
So, in order to give our students an opportunity to practice their skills, we developed in-house,
on-campus mediation services.
So the students are on campus, doing mediations; they're doing outreach; they're training other
students in conflict resolution.
It's about outreach, running a business, and getting some hand-on skills in mediation.
I think a big career opportunity with mediation is maybe not as a mediator, but out in different
organizations, and just to have the mediation skills kind of maybe sets you apart a little
bit from other applicants.
I would like to be a mediator in elderly abuse, just trying to help families to work it out
together, and save relationships, and respect and honour their parents, which I see in many
cases gets lost down the road in conflicts.
Once I finish, I'm planning on starting my own mediation firm.
With the skills that i've been given in the program, I think it's, actually, you know,
a really attainable goal.
My role is a facilitator of student learning.
What I like to do with the mediation students is to put them in situations that are real,
so we do a lot of role-playing in class.
It allows them to grow as students, and as, hopefully, eventual practitioners.
One of the other things we've done with the mediation program is have it approved by the
ADR Institute of Ontario, which is the leading professional association for mediators, and
I think that bodes well for student success as well, to link them directly to their professional
organization as a student.
The teachers, the instructors offered me all the help.
It was like I was respected and accepted as a student like all the others.
We have a great faculty, especially in this program.
We have a lot of experts in the field, and a lot of them are involved in different agencies,
and, you know, I would consider them experts in their field.
It's kind of good having advice from people who have actually gone and done some of the
things that I plan on doing, so it's great to hear from them first-hand.
