Hello everybody, this is Yasmeen from Yarkspiri Fantasy Art . com
Today I'll be working on a female centaur design.
There was a couple of reason why I wanted to draw a female centaur.
I also wanted to take a different approach to the elements that I was going to include in this drawing.
First of all, I decided that I wanted to draw a native american inspired drawing.
I wanted this character to have the painted forms on her body along with clothing which is inspired by native american dress.
I wanted to give her a more natural look which fits with the centaur mythology.
Because this character is half animal, it makes sense that their species probably wouldn't use technology.
This character would probably be depending on more natural elements and would use archery as their hunting tool.
Being a centaur, she would be able to move quickly because of her horse legs.
Taking all of this information, I tried to use it to my advantage when working on this creature design.
This really helped me figure out the pose that I wanted the character to have along with additional design elements.
I'm working on the rough body shape as you can see.
I'm really working with the anatomy to ensure that the pose reads that's she's heard something and she's unsure what it is.
This noise has drawn her attention to the side.
Since she's part horse, horses tend to startle easily because they're not used to fighting off predators.
Most horses don't fight but rather prefer to run away from the threat instead.
This character is a centaur and is part human which is why she's got more of that hunter feeling to herself.
She's going to react startled but it's a threat the can defeat she'll do so by using her bow.
This character's' choice of weapon is a long distance one which best suits her.
This character would have limited maneuverability at close distances but would be very mobile in longer ones.
If her opponent were able to get within a certain range she would have more difficulties reaching them.
It only made sense that this character would have a bow as her weapon because she'd want to keep them at a distance.
I did debate whether or not to include any form of clothes on this character because I wanted her to be in tune with nature.
Since I decided to include the clothes I need to make sure that they reflected this same aspect instead.
I drew in some leather embellished items which are hanging from her clothing.
All of these elements were inspired by native american clothing designs.
Some of the jewelry that she wears is very similar to native american clothing.
Another reason why I decided to draw in the clothing is because it wasn't a style I've actually drawn before.
It was something that I wanted to experiment a little bit with.
I'm just starting on the basic shading for the horse portion of the character.
Horse anatomy can be difficult to draw which is why I must be aware of some of the nuances which would be present.
While I'm drawing this I'm making sure that the anatomy and proportions are correct.
All of that information need to read correctly for the final illustration.
If there're off, it will be noticeable because most people are familiar to what a horse looks like.
It's very similar to the human anatomy, you can normally tell even if you're not sure what it is that's off in the drawing.
Most will be able to tell that something's not correct even if they don't have artistic training of any sort.
I did take a little bit more time while working on the horse portion before moving onto the torso of this character.
Next week's tutorial will be continuation of the texture analysis that I worked on last week
I will be continuing that for at least next weeks episode and I may possibly make more in the future if there's enough demand for it.
After that I'll be working on another illustration. I'm trying to offset the tutorial with the illustrations so that you get more variety.
As you can see, I've just skipped forward because you've already seen me drawing this part before several times.
I've just skipped forward to the hair element of this drawing because this area is more complicated.
Being able to get just the right about of shadow while making sure that the face still reads can be difficult to achieve in the drawing.
I'm just working on the hands right now.
In the final illustration, if you do check out the larger image on my website, I changed and fixed the structure in the hands.
I went in afterwards and fine tuned the structure of the hands in the drawing.
I didn't like the way they were currently structured but it wasn't filmed so you won't see it in the video tutorial.
I do tend to do this with pre-existing drawings. I'll go back and fix them as I learn more or notice the mistakes.
I'm just working on the hand.
I have her leaning more to that one side because that's where she's heard the noise.
She's startled so her focus is in that direction.
I really tried to show this emotion in her facial expression as well as the body.
I've just started working on the foreground elements in this drawing right now.
For the rocks, I'm just working with basic black and white to really harden out those edges before I work out the rest of it.
At this stage it's really easy to make changes if I need to.
It's for this reason that I normally work almost exclusively in black and white when I'm working on the rocks.
It's to make sure that the structure, silhouettes are correct before I begin adding any more detail to them.
It's easier to make changes if I draw this part in just these two shades.
I'm working on the background tree of the forest so this tree will be casting a bit of a shadow.
It's still going to be in the background so it won't have as much detail as the character and subject matter of the illustration.
I'm just working out the basic structure of this tree.
I'm trying to figure out how the perspective will change where the shadow will be coming from.
I've just started adding some of those additional details which will make it look like an older tree.
This is an older tree which is why it's so large.
All of these elements need to show correctly so I'm taking my time to work on this.
Although the tree is behind the character, it still need enough detail to fit with the rest of the drawing.
I'm adding some additional details to those rock elements.
I'm bringing in some cracks, making it look more like some real rocks.
When I draw rocks, even though I've drawn a lot in the past, I tend to stick to one style.
There are several different type of rocks even if I tend to only draw the one style.
Some rocks tend to have a more layered look and this is caused by the sedimentary layers that are slowly being eroded.
Certain portions of those layers tend to be more durable than others which can create a sort of banding in their formation.
For most of my illustrations, I tend to draw a query type of rock because those are the ones which I have the most reference for.
I working out the colors for this drawing now.
I'v just added my basic color layer and I'm adding some additional hightlights.
I've decided to make the rocks a little bit cooler in color in comparison to the rest of the illustration.
I also add in latter a yellowish hue to once side of the character a blue one on the other.
I'm darkening up some of those shadows.
I'm straightening some the shadows on the rocks as well.
I'm making sure that the edges look a little bit more jagid.
I'm doing this by using a combination of the color burn and normal layer options.
When I'm first adding this information, I'm using the color burn tool.
I then sample the darkest color I can find in order to be able to paint in this color on my normal layer.
This allows me to get the shadow that I want and tends to be easier to draw with.
I'm not quite happy with those rocks yet so I'm just tweaking their structure a bit more.
I'm trying to break them up a little bit more than what they already are.
I'm adding some fog to help make certain portions look like they're receding the in background.
I'm making sure that her faremost legs and arms are blurred out slightly to seem like they're further away.
I'm bumping up some of the highlights in the tree as we speak.
I'm adding right now the blue reflected light from the background.
On that side of the character, there's a bluish tint that's coming from her surroundings.
I'm adding this both on the tree and the character and I'll be adding it into the rest of the background momentarily.
I've just started adding that blue tint into the rest of the background behind the character.
I'm blurring out some of that left side because you're seeing too much detail.
I'm just tweaking some of the highlights and shadows as we speak.
I'm adding some of that yellowish hue.
I'm adding a little bit more of that blueish color.
I'm punching up some key areas in the rocks to make sure that they look more rigid than they currently are.
I lighted them a little too much so I need to darken certain areas to compensate.
This is the final illustration as you can see.
I added some tribal tattoos to the character after I finished recording.
I also fixed the hands and this is the final product.
Next week's tutorial will be another texturing tutorial for those of you who want to learn how to render different textures.
Thank you for watching an I hope to see you guys soon. Thank you and take care.
