On behalf of everyone at the Department of Health and Human Services, it's my pleasure
to congratulate USAID on 50 years of progress. Over the past half-century, USAID has helped
to improve health, reduce poverty, and increase opportunity around the world. Now I first
became acquainted with USAID's work across the developing world in the late 70s when
my father, Jack Gilligan, was named by President Jimmy Carter to be the USAID administrator;
and now, as Secretary of HHS, I've had the privilege of seeing USAID's efforts first
hand – as we team-up to confront some of the world's most pressing global health challenges.
By working together to prevent disease and improve access to health care and better nutrition,
we're saving lives and giving millions of people around the world the chance to reach
their full potential – as HHS and USAID also help countries build a foundation for
future health and prosperity that will benefit generations to come. So, congratulations and
thank you for 50 terrific years. I look forward to continuing our work together, as you write
the next chapter in USAID's wonderful history.
