Leading a healthy lifestyle starts with good nutrition. The State Committee of Dietitians
ensures that dietitians are ready to educate us about healthy eating choices.
Good nutrition is the basis of life. Do you want to die young? Do you want to feel
bad for whatever life you've got left? The truth is if you don't spend a little bit
of time with yourself to make sure you are well fed and well hydrated and well rested
you wont be able to do the things you want to do.
Dietitians can be found in all different areas relating to nutrition and nutrition care.
Most of us are taught generally speaking how to develop meal plans, how to work with people,
and how to work with chronic illnesses and in wellness and prevention, and many of us
are taught how to work in administrative settings
We are registered and then licensed in Missouri. a registered dietitian is someone who has
gone through a program that has been supervised with certain criteria to make sure that those
people are trained in all different areas of science related to biology, anatomy and
physiology. We are also, food chemistry, biology, biochemistry and all those things that make
food what they are in our bodies. And we also learn about how to help people eat healthy
and how to work with pharmacies within the health care teams. You must go through at
least a bachelors level program in college and many of us come out with masters degrees.
Once those are completed there is a coordinated experience or an internship very similar to
a physicians residency program. Once a dietitian has completed that there is a National Board,
much like a registered nurse or a physician that all dietitians must take to be registered.
In addition to that every registered dietitian has to obtain a certain level of education
every five years. Our cycles renew and you have to have a had a certain amount of continuing
education credits to maintain your registration.
Good general diet plans include at least three balanced meals a day and plenty of water.
I think water is one of those nutrients we forget about.
You need to have a good source of lean protein plenty of vegetables, fruit, and you want
to make sure you have fruit that hasn't been overly processed, or had a lot of sugar added
to it. And with the starch foods in your diet and then some milk or some yogurt for a good
calcium on the side. ... .
And we have a six inch tortilla, whole wheat and we have our cucumbers and our peppers.
and al we are going to do is slice up the cucumber a little thin, so that it fits well
on your wrap. And now I have this thing about the skin, I think it's good for you so I like
to leave it but some people may want to take a little bit of the skin off. So if we want
to meet that happy medium one of the things we can do real quick take off a little bit.
And it looks real pretty.
So what we are going to do here is slice up just a little bit of pepper. Make it real
thin. Now the pepper is full of vitamin C, lots of fiber and lots of antioxidants. So
you can see we have some thin sliced pepper, you got a little deli turkey breast here and
this is a little hummus. Now hummus is fairly easy to make, which are really just chickpeas,
you can buy in a can pretty cheap or you can buy it pre made. But you blend up your chickpeas
with a little bit of garlic and some lemon and spread it on really nice there on your
tortilla. The fat is a little less than mayonnaise, it does still have some fat in it, but it's
a good heart healthy fat.
Spread your turkey breast right in the center, the hummus will help hold it together. Now
if you don;t have hummus you can always get some low fat cheese, put just a few cucumbers
and our nice thin sliced. I have a tendency to way overload these things because I love
my veggies. But this also gives it some fun crunch and a lot of flavor. The fiber will
fill you up and get full antioxidants. Look at that, that took us two seconds to roll
that up. Put that in a little wrap and you are ready to go.
There is a lot of well educated people out there that can give you good nutrition education.
When it comes down to the real specific meal plans for an individual. When you see a registered
dietitian you can be sure that you will get the facts and things that will work for you.
The department encourages Missourians to eat well and stay active to lead a healthy life.
