Sam: Once upon a time
there lived a poor and lonely soldier's wife.
One day, while out gathering wood,
the wife built a maiden out of snow.
"If only you were real," she sighed.
"How I would love and treasure you."
The Frost Queen heard the wife's wish.
She promised to turn the snow maiden into a real girl,
but with one condition.
In place of her heart, she shall have an icicle.
With that, the maiden magically came to life.
"If she ever steps outside this forest,"
the Frost Queen warned,
"the ice will melt and she will die."
For many years the snow maiden and the wife lived together.
But then one day, the wife died
and the snow maiden was sad
and wandered the forest until she came upon
a young boy from the village lost in the woods.
Taking pity, the snow maiden led him to the edge of the forest.
If she walked any farther,
she knew her heart of ice would melt.
The snow maiden looked into the boy's eyes
and knew what she must do.
She took the boy to his father.
As she watched these two happy souls,
her heart of ice melted and she died.
( train rattling )
( groans )
( breathing heavily )
Young Sam: No! No!
Let me out! Let me out!
( vomits )
- Why the change in orders? - I don't know.
Just make sure you're not in the car when they leave the party.
Don't tell me you're upset about Jack Turner.
It's not Jack. It's that little boy. He's been through hell.
You care about him, don't you?
What about the case?
You're to retrieve it immediately after.
Zoe thinks it must be in a wall safe here.
Three video eyes and none of them found it.
Yeah, bad luck for us.
You realize this op may be the only reason
our client hasn't killed you yet.
I realize.
It ends today, Sam.
You don't have any more time to remember what it was you saw.
When--
when I found out I was going to be a mother...
I started thinking
about all the things
that I hadn't thought about in a long time.
Things that I didn't want to remember ever again.
And now you're telling me to remember
when all I want to do is forget.
Those things that happened to you...
hurt very deeply.
And to remember them
is like living through them all over again.
It's terrifying.
But it's your past, Sam.
If you can remember it, you can put it behind you.
You won't have to be afraid anymore.
( crying )
Zoe.
Hmm?
What is it?
Nothing.
- Zoe, what are-- - Shh.
- Stop. - Hmm?
- I said just stop. - What?
- We need to talk. - About ***?
About *** to avoid talking.
( scoffs )
What's bothering you?
New orders came in last night.
We've got a big job today.
Big job?
Nothing to do with your friend yesterday?
I'd tell you if it were, Andrew.
It's my legs that don't work anymore, Zoe, not my eyes.
- What are you saying? - I can see when something's bothering you.
Let me in.
You know I can't talk about work,
so why do you keep asking?
- How much? - Just enough to slow her down.
We don't want to alarm her friends
watching in the library.
We should keep her away from there.
No, I want whoever she works for to see
there's nothing to worry about.
But make sure she's not left on her own in there.
How long do we keep this up for?
Not long at all now.
Just till Soomro signs the deal.
- Morning, Alex. - You ready for your party?
Yeah, so ready. Granddad.
- Nice to see him excited. - Yeah.
What is it?
What do you mean?
Well, yesterday we were leaving together
and today you can't look me in the eye.
Look, I'm sorry. I should have explained.
Something happen with your father?
Uh, yeah. Things are a bit more complicated than I thought.
- Don't worry. - Jack: It wouldn't be a surprise, would it?
- We all ready, then? - Yeah. Come on.
Let's go.
Jack: Have you got your driving license?
- Eddie: I'm 11. - ( winces )
What do you reckon, eh?
Know where you're going? Any idea?
Eh?
Fowkes: Elvis is in the building.
On it.
Come on, Eddie!
Go on, Eddie.
Miss Kent. Champagne?
- Thank you. - Cheers.
( men chatting )
( beeping )
( cheering )
Shameless, that is.
Using the boy.
Why are we keeping her on?
Why not just let her go?
We will let her go when the time's right.
Target's leaving the building.
Deacon: Stand by.
Fowkes: Target should be in your line of sight...
now.
Target's entering kill zone.
Zoe: Armed.
Just hold on a second.
Fowkes: Hang on. He's walking away from the vehicle.
***.
Eddie.
Why don't you come back with Granddad?
We-- we have plenty of room.
Well, I thought we might get some ice cream on the way home.
- Can I, Dad? - Yeah, I suppose so.
He just-- he just had cake.
It's all right.
Come on, son.
Fowkes: ***, the kid's getting in the wrong car.
- Deacon. - ***!
Fowkes: Target's entering kill zone.
Zoe: What should we do?
Zoe: Deacon?!
( screams )
( groans )
- ***, Sam. - Alex.
Do it. Do it now.
Target is moving away.
Now. Do it now.
( car alarm blaring )
Fowkes: Did we get him?
Zoe: Stand by.
You okay?
Eddie: Yeah, I'm okay.
Sir!
( sighs )
Are you okay?
Yeah, I'm okay.
Sir, leave him. Leave him, sir.
There's nothing we can do for him.
( sighs )
Let's get out of here.
There's nothing we can do. We have to leave him now.
- Bingham: Sidearms out front. - Yes, sir.
- SMGs in the garden. - Yes, Mr. Bingham.
You should go to a hospital, Dad.
Nah.
- Hey, how you doing? You okay? - I'm fine.
How's your ankle, Miss Kent?
It's nothing. I just twisted it a little.
You sure?
Good thing, too. We owe you our lives.
Don't we, Eddie?
I think we're all a bit shaken up.
Rubbish. Eddie's all right, aren't you, son?
Yeah. Yeah, I'm okay.
That's the best fireworks display you'll ever see, eh?
It's a good job your presents were in the other car.
Bingham. Would you see that Eddie's presents
- are taken into the library? - Of course.
Miss Kent will help you unwrap them. Won't you, Miss Kent?
Is that what you want to do, open presents?
- I suppose so. - Of course it is.
( winces )
What happened back there?
Somebody tried to kill me, obviously.
Someone nearly killed my son.
Yeah, well, they're desperate.
We got them just where we want them.
This is all about the dam, isn't it?
It's game over, Stevie.
They won't get to me again.
We've won.
- I'm taking Eddie away. - No, you're not.
- Look at him. He's scared to death. - It's not safe.
Dad, there are men outside the house with guns.
For my protection and yours.
Inside this house is the safest place on earth
till that contract's signed.
She saved your life.
She saved the boy.
Only proves she's a spy.
How else would she know there was a bomb?
Yeah, I'm watching.
Where would you like the gifts, Miss Kent?
On the coffee table, right, Eddie?
Eddie: Yeah.
May I have a word, please?
I'm afraid I have to ask you for your mobile phone.
What for?
It's for everyone's protection,
under the circumstances.
Okay.
( typing )
- ( beeping ) - Come on.
I have to ask you not to leave the house.
Am I under arrest or something?
I apologize for any inconvenience, Miss Kent.
It's just for a short while.
The whole house is crawling with guards.
- And they've taken her phone. - Do you think they know she's a spy?
The moment she saved that boy's life, she sentenced herself to death.
- She had to know that. - Fowkes: Then why'd she do it?
Thought Sam had ice in her veins.
We need to get her out of there, Deacon.
Yeah.
They'll torture her like they did Hasan.
Do you want to lose another operative?
You're saying I lost Hasan?
- I'm saying you're team leader. - Right.
- So it's your call. - My call?
My call would have had your *** fired
the second I found out you lied about Hasan.
- Well, we're talking about Sam now. - Get out of my face.
Not until you give the order to get her out.
- Whoa! - Enough!
Sam's fine.
- They're gonna kill her. - Why haven't they done that already?
This-- this is for show. They figured out we're watching.
So she's not in immediate danger.
They could kill her any moment and you know it.
We need to pull her out.
How do you suggest we do that?
- We go in. - That would blow the op.
It's not an option, is it, Deacon?
Turner's still alive. He still has the evidence against our client.
And that's worth the life of your best operative, is it?
We get Turner's evidence out, then we get Sam out, not before.
How are we supposed to get that case out of there
with all those guards surrounding the place?
Good question.
We don't get the case out.
Well, then how do we complete the op?
There's another way.
Fowkes: Why doesn't she get the case?
Because either Eddie or Bingham has been in there all day.
- Still... - Next time, why don't you strap on a bra
and try being Sam, okay?
You're tense. What you need is a wee neck rub.
Put your hands on me, I'll break them off.
All right, Keel has asked the client to instruct Soomro
to go to Turner's house tomorrow morning.
- Fowkes: What for? - To sign a contract for the dam.
That's your plan? Letting Turner win?
How does that help?
You'll go with Soomro as a member of his security detail.
Once the evidence is verified, you destroy it.
No need to get the evidence out of the house if it doesn't exist.
Turner's blackmail goes away
and he doesn't win the contract. The client wins.
Once the evidence is destroyed, the op is over.
We get Sam out of there.
I am so sorry
you didn't get any presents again this year.
( chuckles )
Hungry?
- Yeah. - Come on, dinner's ready.
( groans )
I think I'll go upstairs and rest, if that's okay.
You all right?
Bit of a headache, that's all.
I'll be fine.
No.
Reporter: A man has been killed and several other people injured
in a suspected bomb attack in East London.
The Metropolitan Police say the man,
who's not been identified,
was sitting in a stationary car
when it exploded at a go-karting track
in the London Docklands area.
Detectives are investigating...
Very messy.
Reporter: ...was deliberately placed under the vehicle.
Eyewitnesses described a huge fireball and blast
which shook windows in a nearby building.
You should know I have a gun in my hand
just in case you're thinking of jabbing me with one of your little needles.
I'm just here to talk.
Why haven't you retrieved Sam Hunter yet?
I didn't come here to answer your questions.
So why did you come here?
( chuckles )
You think you can rattle me?
You know how this will end.
You don't scare me.
Byzantium might have disappointed my employer...
but I won't.
Then one of us will walk away from this...
and one of us won't.
Thank you.
Mr. Stephen, something here for you.
Thank you.
Excuse me.
Did you send me this?
Can you open the gate?
Stephen Turner has just left the house.
Excuse me.
Hang on.
Miss, what's this about?
I don't want them seeing me.
What are you so afraid of?
You don't know, do you?
Why don't you tell me?
I can't. They'll do the same thing to me
as they did to your wife.
I think you'd better tell me what you're talking about.
I watch your house from my room.
I should have told you before, but I was so scared.
- What are you... - Please!
...talking about?
Your wife.
They killed her.
My wife killed herself.
Yeah, she drowned herself
in the pool in the back garden.
She-- she drowned, but she didn't kill herself.
Do you want money? Is that it?
Listen to me.
I saw them do something to her
in her room.
She went outside and...
she was so weak, she could barely stand.
And he was there.
Who?
It was a black guy in a hoodie.
I've seen him outside your house before.
And he pushed her in.
I was just waiting
and waiting
for her to come back up
or to swim, but...
she was just floating there.
Like an angel.
Why are you telling me this now?
Because it's happening again
to that other woman.
( groaning )
( breathing heavily )
( gasps )
There's Sam.
She's going for the case.
Aidan: She doesn't look well.
Bingham's outside.
Deacon: That's good.
Fowkes: Bingham's going back in.
Well, he's gonna walk in on her.
- We need to warn her. - How?
- Give me my phone. - She doesn't have hers.
Just give it to me!
( phone rings )
Hello?
- ( beeps ) - Hello?
What are you doing in here?
Answer the question.
I was just getting Eddie's things.
- Wait. - What?
Bingham: Wait here.
Forgive me.
As you can see, I'm a little on edge.
My name is Stephen Turner.
Yeah, I know who you are.
Where's Dave?
Dave's dead.
Someone bumped him off.
Did you kill him?
Like you killed my wife?
- What? - You heard me.
Well, if I did or I didn't,
you really think I'd tell you?
Why?
Why does anything happen?
I mean, why am I living in some *** dump
while you're up there in the big house with the old man?
I don't feel sorry for you.
( scoffs )
Nah.
Nah, of course you don't.
You don't even know who I am, do you?
You, with all your money, your airs.
You think you're better than me.
Hmm?
You ain't.
I'm a better son to him than you'll ever be.
Who are you?
( exhales )
Up you go.
Miss Kent, may I have a word, please?
Of course.
( grunts )
You should really drink more liquids,
Miss Kent.
( gags )
There, there.
You rest now.
We'll take good care of you.
Mr. Soomro. Right this way.
You must be disappointed seeing me alive.
I've learned not to underestimate you, Mr. Turner.
You brought the contract?
I did, but I won't sign it,
not until the validity of your evidence has been confirmed.
I understand.
Well, they said it was hydrogen sulfide
that bubbled up from the bottom of that lake
and killed 600 villagers in Pakistan.
But...
a Dutch engineer named Horst Goebel knew better.
He went out on that lake
and he took sediment samples.
And what do you think he found?
No hydrogen sulfide at the bottom of the lake.
How could that be?
Unless the gas didn't come from underwater.
It was sprayed in the air.
All to make way for a dam.
Can you prove this is what you say it is?
Well...
sediment samples are as unique and undeniable as a fingerprint.
More so 'cause they can't be faked.
That one's for you, Mr. Soomro.
Go ahead, have it analyzed.
I'll wait.
You looking for someone?
- Where is he? - He's in the library.
Tell him I need to see him in his office.
I'm afraid he can't be disturbed right now.
Are you gonna tell him or shall I?
Dad.
How you doing?
I'm okay.
- Where's Alex? - She's in her room.
Mr. Bingham says she's not feeling well.
How do you fancy going to Jackson's, watch a DVD?
- Okay. - Good.
Miss Sidwa, would you mind taking him over?
Of course not. Come on.
- No rocks this time? - It's the real deal.
But Turner's still got a sample.
We need that sample destroyed.
I couldn't locate Sam.
Do you think she's okay?
Get that to Keel. Make it fast.
( clock ticking )
( indistinct whispering )
Young Sam: Let me out! Let me out!
Let me out! Let me out!
How long will it take you to analyze this?
Minutes.
Dam's as good as ours, Stevie.
Soomro's in there *** himself.
The Chinese won't be happy.
Not the Chinese.
Polyhedrus.
The Chinese were fronting for them.
Controlling water. ( scoffs )
That's pretty valuable to a multinational corporation, isn't it?
Water's the future, Stevie.
A few years, it'll be more valuable than oil.
Take it from them now
when their entire corporation is counting on it.
We've hurt them badly.
- Why? - What do you mean why?
Well, you don't care about water.
Or the dam.
So why did you go to all this trouble?
- Stevie. - Don't lie to me, Dad.
Just for once in your life.
( sniffles )
Justice.
Justice?
When I was building my fortune
in Docklands,
who do you think tried to bully me?
Tried to run me out of business?
Threatened me if I wouldn't get out of their way?
And when that didn't work, they took my eldest son,
your brother,
and they cut his poor body to pieces.
John was murdered
by two Pakistani men.
And you had them killed.
Them Pakis were just following orders.
It wasn't the man
who gave the order to kill your brother.
If it had been, I'd have killed his sons,
killed his whole family.
It was Polyhedrus.
A corporation.
So what was I to do
to get justice for my dead son?
Huh?
If I couldn't kill a man,
I'd bloody well kill a corporation.
Taken me the best part of 20 years,
but I've done it, Stevie.
I've finally done it.
John's still dead, Dad.
I spoke to your son.
He told me what happened.
My son?
Yeah, the one you won't admit to
because his skin's the wrong color.
The one you had *** my wife.
His name's Tyrone.
And he's always been loyal.
He's never crossed me.
She was no good for you, Stevie.
She wanted to take you and Eddie away.
And she would have, too.
She would have destroyed this family.
Stevie.
Stevie.
It's been good, you know?
Really been enjoying it.
I just wanted to say thanks for giving me a chance.
Not everyone would.
What? What's it say?
( phone rings )
Crane.
Yeah.
Got it.
You'd better get back to that house.
What is it?
Not what we thought.
Where do you think you're going, sir?
I'm leaving. I'm taking her with me.
No, she's not going anywhere.
This should be interesting.
Mmm.
( whispering )
Good-bye, Mr. Turner.
Mr. Soomro?
We've got a contract to sign.
We won't be signing any contract.
You think I won't go public with this?
I'll splash this over every newspaper
in time for the shareholders meeting tomorrow morning.
I don't think the Polyhedrus shareholders
would be much interested in a tube of dirt.
What are you saying?
Your sample, Mr. Turner.
It's nothing but nitrogen fertilizer.
You've been had.
And so have I.
Police, please.
( cars starting )
Come on.
Are you all right, sir?
Clear the house.
Everybody except Alex Kent.
Deacon: Aidan, where are you?
I'm going back in.
Yeah, there's two cars coming in.
- Bingham: Load up the car. - Yeah.
- Move, move, move. - What's going on?
Bingham, what's happening? Bingham!
( beeping )
( gates rattling )
***.
Mr. Marsh.
Who are you?
You need to get into that house now.
What do you know?
She's been poisoned. You need to give her this.
How do I know this isn't poison?
Why would I need to kill someone who's already dying?
- How can we get back in? - Who are you?
He's gonna kill her. Can you get me in?
Bingham's got the override key. He's gone around the back.
Stay here.
Don't move.
( young Sam screams )
( crows caw )
Young Sam: Help!
Let me out!
( screams )
Sam's mother: Once upon a time
in a deep frozen forest...
( grunts )
( screams )
Sam's mother: Sam, hide.
Sam!
( shouts )
( panting )
( gasping )
Wait there.
Sam.
Sam, can you hear me?
Sam.
( gasps )
You're late.
( laughs )
It's okay. You're gonna be okay.
I remember.
I remember.
( siren blaring )
Good morning, Mr. Keel.
I'm afraid I don't know your name.
Only that it isn't Horst Goebel.
You've given your client everything he asked...
except this.
I gather you took that from the real Horst Goebel.
( screaming )
Among other things.
I wouldn't surrender this to Jack Turner.
Not the real case.
Not once I realized its value.
What is it you want?
Not what, Mr. Keel.
Who.
When will you be back?
I need some answers about Hourglass.
At least now I know what I'm looking for.
This is good-bye, then?
Be careful.
( sighs )
Andrew.
Andrew!
Where is he?
I told him you were in the cafe.
He's waiting for you.
What do you want?
I'm not here to threaten you.
You being here is a threat.
Everything's going to be fine, Zoe.
So long as you bring her to me.
- And if I don't? - Oh, you will.
- ( knocks ) - ( door opens )
What's that?
My letter of resignation.
A man with your skill set is rare, Deacon.
I don't think you'll find fulfillment managing security guards in a shopping mall.
I can't compromise my conscience anymore.
Not for you. Not for anyone.
Take responsibility for anything in life
if you find yourself compromised, Deacon.
The greater the responsibility,
the heavier the burden.
You don't seem burdened.
I don't seek to deny human nature.
Maybe you wouldn't either if you were sitting in my chair.
Well, I'm not, am I?
No, but you could be sooner than you think.
I'd like to think a man like you
would take over for me after I go.
Can I leave now?
There's one last decision to be taken.
What's that?
Our Horst Goebel impersonator.
He has possession of Turner's evidence against our client.
What's he gonna do with it?
Expose our client unless we give him what he wants.
- Which is? - Sam Hunter.
It seems our client's employed
a competing operative to take her life.
- What are you gonna do? - What would you do if it was your decision?
I'd like to finish this once and for all,
but I need your assistance.
( toy car humming )
Thanks for coming.
I'm sorry about your grandfather.
Dad says you're going back to America.
I have to.
I wanted to tell you that I finished your mother's book.
Did you find the ending sad?
No.
No, I liked it. It's just--
she didn't really die, did she?
I'm gonna miss you, Alex.
Gonna miss you, too.
Come on.
( phone ringing )
- Yes? - Zoe: I need to see you.
- What is it? - Something you need to know.
Can you meet me at Victoria Dock?
- Okay. - It's urgent.
I'll be there as soon as I can.
How *** is this?
( gunshot )
Sam: The snow maiden looked into the boy's eyes
and knew what she must do.
She took the boy to his father.
As she watched these two happy souls,
her heart of ice melted and she died.
- ( baby cooing ) - Hello.
Sam: But the snow maiden's body
turned into a perfect snowflake
that rose into the air and danced on the breeze.
Until at last it vanished in the sunlight.
( theme music playing )
