My name is Omar Ortiz. I served in the US Army as a graphic designer and I am a Federal Investigator with the US Office of Personnel Management.
There are two main reasons, why I joined the Army. The first one would be trying to do something productive with my life
and the other one would be, you know, do something for society, serve my country in an honorable way.
The experience was really interesting, being away for the first time, being on your own, that showed me how to be a leader and do things by yourself.
When I left the service with the US Army I was really interested in still working for the Federal Government.
It was hard. I actually tried before graduating, working for the Department of Veteran's Affairs through a work study program for Veterans.
Still, I was unable to actually get a job there and it took my five years to get a position or a position that I wanted with the Federal Government.
One of the main reasons is because my time of service also continues from the US Army with the Federal service for retirement.
In my job I'm in charge of interviewing people regarding their background investigation
meaning people that are considered by the US Government to positions that require a security clearance, positions that could have an impact in our national security.
What I like about my job is that every day is different.
Mostly I work out of my home but at least once or twice every week I have to stop by the field office and from there I drop off, pick up new cases
get supplies, review my cases before I actually start my investigation.
Well, being in the Army you really have to be organized, for the rules. Sometimes you really have to watch for other people
and serving four years with the US Army really helped me for this line of work in that manner.
Veteran's are people that service, they volunteer to serve their country.
My best advice would be, don't give up. It's hard to get a job with the Federal Government. I mean it's a very competitive market.
Don't give up, you know, use your resources and eventually you will have the job that you are looking for.
