Hi I'm Laura from youngwritersworkshops.com and I'm going to talk about how to make a
coupon book for a child to give to a parent as a gift. This is a great activity to do
with children. I like to approach it as a brainstorming and writing task because it
really can be a way to think creatively and come up with ideas that is almost like a form
of a story of a child's life with their parent. So the first part of the activity is brainstorming
ideas of some of the things that they enjoy doing together and some of the things that
the child loves to do for the parent. This can lead them through having some ideas of
what are the things do you like to do, what kinds of things does your parent enjoy eating,
what kinds of things makes your mom smile or what makes your dad smile. This activity
can also be a chance for kids to do early writing. You can encourage them to invent
some spellings of things that they've done together and they don't have to have it all
spelled right, they can just make their own list of things that they enjoy or their parents
enjoy. The next step is to help them to choose which ones from their list they are going
to be able to quantify into their list of coupons for example can you make one breakfast
or can you do one game of tag together so that is the next step in deciding what is
going to be on the coupons then just take any kind of card stock or colorful paper even,
I really again encourage students to do the writing themselves. Let the kids do the writing.
It is going to make it very endearing for the parents to have a way, a memory of the
way their children wrote and spelled the words and their own phrasing so encourage and allow
kids to do a lot of it on their own and constructing the book can be very simple, just some papers
or card stock tied together with a ribbon or stapled together and it is going to be
a memory that the parents will have to be able to keep and look back on fondly for a
long time. So those are some ideas about making a coupon book from kids to parents.
