Should I neuter my cat?
That depends on what you intend to do with your cat or cats.
Take care of her. Love her for the rest of her life or mine, whichever comes first.
In some jurisdictions, you are required to neuter a cat unless you have a breeding license
or swear that’s the only cat and you’ll keep her indoors forever.
Why would they do that? Cats like to be outside and want to go out.
While the news talks about human overpopulation, pet overpopulation is a major problem. While
some people breed in demand breeds for sale, most kittens and puppies for that matter are
unwanted and end up dead.
What does that have to do with neutering laws? I’m not going to run a puppy mill or kitten
whatever.
If almost all the cats are neutered, you prevent a mass of unwanted kittens that have to be
killed at the shelter. And you prevent them from being let loose, spreading disease.
Cats don’t spread disease. They're actually rather clean compared to pets like dogs.
Cats can carry ticks and fleas, which will spread disease to humans when they find someone
to bite. Cats carry taxoplasmosis, which can cause miscarriage in women and has been linked
to schizophrenia, anxiety, depression and mental illness.
So is the crazy cat lady more than just a stereotype? It doesn’t matter, though, because
I only plan to have one, healthy cat.
You’d still be better off neutering the cat when you get it. You could even get discounts
at various SPCA days where they neuter pets for free or almost free.
I didn’t know that.
The other choice is to only have female cats and make sure she never gets out.
I can’t guarantee that.
Then you should neuter your cat. Then it doesn’t matter if she gets out, and you’ll never
have a problem registering your cat.
