Have you seen the movie
"Iron Man"? OK, so in the movie, Iron Man Tony Stark has this
holographic projection system where he can have three-dimensional objects
on display, projected in space, and he can actually use his fingers to
pinch on to the objects, move them around, and stick his hands through them, and stuff.
That is exactly what I have created. My system projects three-dimensional objects in space,
and you can actually see the 3D world through the goggles right here.
That was just a really simple proof of concept, but if you're a
surgeon-in-training, you could actually use my thing to simulate like a
virtual frontal lobotomy procedure, where you have a person's skull projected in your hand,
and a little knife projected here, and just go through the procedure. The computer could guide you where to cut and how
to cut.
My project is called CWADIS, Continual Water Disinfection System,
a new way to disinfect water,
by using a combination of UV light and radiation,
and renewable energy resources. I came up with the idea because the
existing water disinfection systems, such as chlorination and boiling,
they both affect the chemical quality and the taste of water.
To see CWADIS applied in each single house, just like the normal filters we have in our
houses. Or, if that was not possible to apply it so fastly,
we can do it in water disinfection plants as a huge scale or a large scale
where we can disinfect water and then send it to other homes,
disinfect it, without the need to disinfect it in each single house.
Hi, I'm Terry McGlynn, I'm a Professor
of Biology at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The most impressive things about it,
well first of all, being able to meet all these other students who
also had projects that were far more amazing than mine,
that were all exited about science. It was just great to be in a community for a week
for all these kids that were super-smart and super-talented, and really
motivated. Amazingly enough, twenty-something years later, they found
from my parents' home address, I got an email
saying, "Would you like to be a judge, since you were at one point a finalist?"
But also, the information was going around. So it worked with my schedule,
and it was a day and a half, and it was a great time to talk to all the kids here
and see everything they are doing. So, since I could find the time, it's a pleasure.
My names Elsbith Murata.
I go to Fresno State. And my name is Sean Carter, and I go to Fresno State.
A couple of people like us,
personally we're presenting our research to the students as they walk through,
as well as ten or eleven
others of us. We're actually supervising the
student activities as the high school students are going through,
showing them how to take the fingerprints,
lift them, cast impressions, like tred
tred impressions, and then blood splatter analysis.
It's been fun. It's a big fair,
so it's interesting to see all the work that
so many of the students do, even before they get to
a school or to a college. I'm jealous. I wish I had this in high school.
