[Greg Moore] I'm Greg Moore, I'm the President and CEO
of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy in San Francisco, California
[Mike Boland] My name's Mike Boland and I'm the acing Executive
Director of the Presidio Trust [Greg Moore]
With the National Park Service we partner in many ways, first of all, we're a community
engagement partner helping make our parks relevant to the people who live nearby, secondly
we're a philanthropic partner helping ask people to give back to their parks by volunteering
and contributing funds, thirdly we help care for and steward this National Park into the
future [Mike Boland]
Now we co-manage the Presidio of San Franscisco which is a National Park site with the National
Park Service, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area which is the largets urban
National Park in America [Greg Moore]
I'm here in New Zealand to work with our colleagues in the National Park Service here, with the
Department of Conservation, with city parks, with councils throughout New Zealand to help
them explore their parklands and how to preserve them best moving into the future by working
with communities and partners [Mike Boland]
I'm here with a group of individuals from around the world who focus on new models for
governing and funding park sites [Greg Moore]
New Zealand is truly an amazing country, the first impressions are wonderful but the deeper
impressions are even better because it's a place of such nature, such impressive culture
and such community commitment to those values so it's an honor to be here, it's been an
amazing journey working with our colleagues who care for such special places in New Zealand
and sharing our experience with them [Mike Boland]
My impressions of New Zealand are that it is a country that has a deep investment in
it's natural and cultural heritage and that it's really breaking new ground in how you
can steward biodiversity in the 21st century and I've been so impressed by the incredible
work that DOC is doing along with all of their community partners and traditional owners
of the land to take New Zealands land into the 21st century in really innovative ways
that I think can be a model for how we think about stewarding biodiversity in the 21st
century [Greg Moore]
New Zealanders should come and visit our parks for the same reason they go to their own parks,
because they're beautiful places, they contain the best of nature and history, and because
they exemplify our countries. In the American National Park System, there are 405 National
Park sites, they're all really magical and wonderful, beautiful scenery, amazing nature,
incredible heritage and we love visitors from around the globe
[Mike Boland] You know, the Presidio of San Francisco in
the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, they're really unique among National Park
sites in America, rich in history, they're rich in ecology, they have incredible scenery,
they have beautiful recreational resources, and you can take the bus there, you come to
the Presidio and you can actually camp under the stars, listen to the waves crashing and
seals barking and have an incredible National Park experience right in your own backyard
so I think we have a certain type of National Park experience that's pretty unique
[Greg Moore] Bringing in the 100th anniversary of our National
Parks by asking the American public to refind their National Parks, to discover by visiting
these parks the special meaning they can bring to themselves, to their family members, people
they care about andto recommit themselves to the value of these place into the next
century of our National Parks System [Mike Boland]
The centennial of the National Parks is a really important milestone in the history
of America's greatest idea, and we're delighted to be partnering with the National Park Service
and our other community partners in celebrating in a number of ways and trying to work with
the National Park Service to position the Presidio to be increasingly relevant in the
21st century. You know if the 20th century was about preserving America's heritage, I
think the 21st century is really about making America's heritage something that can be enjoyed
by everyone in our country and we're very committed to working with our partners in
the National Park Service to help everyone in our community find their park, which is
a fundemental thing we're trying to accomplish in the centennial year
[Greg Moore] In Te Anau I'm looking forward to seeing the
most incredible iconic scenery that is known around the world, clearly it's a beautiful
and stunning location but even more than that I'm interested in the park practices, the
care for the place, the community involvement in this splendid National Park and how I can
be helpful in any way in contributing to the future of this world-class place
[Mike Boland] Oh my god, I'm going to Fiordland and I've
never been there and it is the most, from what I can tell one of the most remarkable
landscapes on the planet and I'm looking forward to taking it all in and understanding the
complexities of that site and the ways that DOC is managing it
