Hi. We're special education graduate students from California Lutheran University. We'd
like to show you our device which we call the Doodle Bug writing aid. We created the
Doodle Bug for one of our students who is about to turn 3. Our student has a cleft hand
and is unable to grasp a pencil or crayon. The Doodle Bug allows her to manipulate a
crayon or pencil, letting her color and even learn how to write. A ball bearing caster
on the bottom of the device enables it to move smoothly across the paper. There is a
flat steady platform on which to rest the hand, while a pencil grip is cut on an angle
to hold the crayon, pencil, or pen securely. We'll show you how this works with a crayon.
A small motion lifts the crayon off the paper and allows it to glide across the page easily.
Through testing we also found it worked for one of our 6th grade students who had a hand
injury that required a cast, allowing her to complete her school work without additional
assistance. This device would also work well for older adults with diminished grip due
to arthritis, allowing for greater independence in writing and signing documents. The Doodle
Bug is ideal for anyone ages 3 to 93 who has difficulty holding a writing implement. Thank
you.
