What is all the fuss about Google Wave? If you are like me, you have used email
for close to 15 years. And you may have noticed that sometimes it breaks down. Like, take
this experience for example: Say, you email your web guy and say, "Hey, can you get that
new website functionality, A, B and C up and running?" And then your web guy replies, "Oh,
yeah bro, no worries. I got A,B, and C under control. And so you "cc" your boss, so he
can watch what's going on. And then you reply, "oh yeah, and here's that list of bugs that
we found." And then he's like, "oh, yeah, yeah, no problem - here's that password to
that thing that you can check out, when you have time." And your like, "sweet, and here's
that attachment." And then you realize that you should forward this whole thing to your
video guy, so he can catch up on what's going on. He gets this mess of an email, that would
take a programmer to uncode. And he doesn't reply all, so it creates another version of
this thing. And everyone keeps posting and highlighting their answers to certain questions
in the replies. The whole thing just starts mutating into this, this, monster... thing.
Did you know, email was invented 40 years ago? The same year as, the lava lamp. So Google
set out to rethink email. They took all the best features of these new communication innovations.
And they asked, what would email look like if it was made today?Instead of emails being
passed along. Google Wave is a hosted conversation, with only one copy that anyone can contribute
to. So I can write, A, B and C functionality that I wanna see happen in this website and
then I can invite my web guy to the Wave. And I can invite my boss too. And if we're
online at the same time, I can actually see his replies in realtime. He can drag and drop
attachments. And then later you can invite the video guy and he can replay the whole
conversation with the playback tool to catch up. It's all really slick and convenient and,
not at all, a monster. And that's like 3.5 percent of what Google Wave can do, from what
I understand. You know, just kick it, grab a Margarita. And watch your communication-ness,
soar. If I could only get an invite - that'd be great. So, um, come on Google. Give me
an invite.
