"Women and children need more than pledges.
Commitments are wonderful, generous, but by themselves
they cannot build health clinics or immunize children."
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon,
speaking in Geneva, Tuesday, at the first meeting
of the Commission on Information and Accountability
for Women and Children's Health.
The commission aims to improve the health
of women and children worldwide, by tracking pledges and donations,
monitoring how they are used and finding the best ways
to help improve services for those who need them the most.
So far, 40 billion dollars has been pledged
- a sum that could save the lives of 16 million
women and children by 2015.
This money, the Secretary-General says,
must be spent in a transparent way.
"We will monitor what we are doing with the funds that do come in.
We will ensure that progress is made across the spectrum,
and where we fall short, we will be open about that, too. "
