I was on this downward spiral. I was drinking more, not connected to my family, my marriage
was failing. I needed to do something different and that's when I chose to get help. I was
in either marriage counseling or individual counseling. In hindsight, it probably saved
my life. It saved my marriage. I personally believe that I am a better human being, husband,
and I am a better father, and that at the end of the line, I'm also a better solder.
So, if I can be the Sergeant Major of the Army and my boss, who was the Chief of Staff
of the Army, accepts that I am in behavioral health care counseling, then I think it's
okay for any soldier to be in behavioral health care counseling and do their job. We need
every single one of them as emotionally, spiritually and physically healthy as we possibly can.
You always need help, but there is tremendous help out there. You've just got to ask.
